By the time you see this newsletter, our annual Young Eagles Day and Fly-In will be only four months away. How quickly the time goes. Between that time, some of our Chapter 1111 members will go on an Australian flying adventure. If the skies will only lift and break, then we can all sharpen our skills for flying around the patch or around the world. I'm sure we can count on the Australia flyers to give us a presentation later in 2002.
While we wait out all the rains, why not be planning or working on the project, or performing a bit of maintenance? While some items are saved for the annual or condition inspection, other items need attention more often.
I recall watching an RV-6 land at the Prosser fly-in a few years ago, and come to a wobbly stop on the runway. The tire had worn out through the cords and the tube was punctured by a rock. This was not a mechanical failure, but neglect of tire inspection. Wheel pants do provide extra speed and keep the plane cleaner, but they can conceal wear and tear.
For those of you with planes having aluminum skin, take a careful walk around with a good shop light in hand and look for cracks around rivet heads and 'smoking' rivets. A stop drill hole will usually control further cracking. The 'smoking' rivet is a term used to describe a rivet that has loosened enough to fret or move, causing a dark gray smudge of aluminum powder around the head of the rivet. The late Tony Binglis, HQ EAA Technical Advisor, recommended getting back on the rivet with a gun and bucking bar and snugging it up. If it still 'smokes' later, it will have to be replaced. Possibly an oversized rivet will be needed if the hole has enlarged too much.
There is a new email newsletter distributed from the EAA HQ called the 'EAA Chapter E-Gram'.
Here is a clip of the first section of the latest E-Gram:
"EAA Chapter E-Gram
Vol. 4, No. 2 January 25, 2002
SPECIAL CONTRIBUTION: 11 Youth EAA Memberships Through the generosity of a fellow EAA member, Ray Scholler, Director Emeritus, eleven youth EAA memberships have been made available to Chapters for donation to area youth. The donor wishes to share EAA with a group of kids (Ages 18 and Under) that would be otherwise unable to afford to join EAA and experience the many joys that aviation brings.
We are asking Chapters to seek out young people who have a genuine interest in aviation and to provide us with the name, information and background on these youngsters that they are submitting for an award of one of the eleven memberships. Please submit only one youth membership nomination per Chapter. The first eleven Chapters to submit their completed nomination will be awarded one of the youth memberships to bestow upon their nominee.
Nominations should can be submitted by e-mail to: banderson@eaa.org or by mail to: EAA, Chapter Office, PO Box 3086, Oshkosh, WI 54903. Please be sure to include the following information:
Chapter Division and Number
Chapter Contact Person & Contact Information
Name of Youth Nominee
Supporting information on youth nominee's background, interest,
etc.
Reason why they deserve the membership.
This is a wonderful opportunity to share aviation with a young person. Our appreciation goes out to Ray for making it possible."
Other topics in the E-Gram include:
"CHAPTERS GIVEN FIRST
OPPORTUNITY FOR 2002 EAA AIR ACADEMY
OVERDUE 2002 CHAPTER RENEWAL Special Reminder

East Coast Regional Fly-In, New Dates for September, 2002

This E-Gram is on our web page in its entirety. I will try to remember to put the latest E-Gram on the web page when I get them for those who don't get the email. There is not a link on the E-Gram itself to start or stop a subscription... I am sure it is available on the EAA web page.
The board met at Mike Lewis' shop an hour before the normal meeting. Jerry Sorrell, Mark Edwards, Al Drewry, Eric Hoppe and Mike Lewis were present.
The strategy for the meeting was discussed as were teh topics of: the fly-in, Fernando's videos, and calendars. Since these items were also discussed in the regular meeting, the details will be outlined in the minutes below.
The January meeting saw 17 members present, including officers.
Eric Hoppe read the minutes from the last meeting to get everyone up to speed and refresh memories of club happenings. A correction was made to the minutes by Jerry - Tony Bequette's sailplane is residing in Jerry's hangar, not the club hangar. Another correction stated Sam and Sandi Archer are the correct Young Eagles coordinators.
Jerry talked about potential dates for the EAA 1111 fly-in. We do not want to conflict with the Scapoose RV fly-in. National Young Eagles day is June 8th. June 23rd is the RV gathering at Scapoose. Fernando was not present to offer additional information. We will be asking Merrill if we can use the tarmack on the south side of the FBO in addition to a couple of the front hangars so the planes and cars can all be together.
The calendars arrived and were quickly devoured by the members. There are a few left. If you would like one, please give Al Drewry a call to reserve one.
There is a Prescott Pusher on the field. It appears to have had a rough landing?? and is waiting for repairs. The owner/pilot is Norris Hibbler, an insurance salesman from Vancouver. He has mentioned donating it to the Pearson Museum rather than continue to fly it.
The treasurer's report showed $9.10 in checking, $3064.29 in savings (building fund), and $7022.25 in the CD.
A couple people mentioned problems opening the member list on the web page. That will be looked into.
Dwight Irby recognized Eric Hoppe for his efforts on the newsletter.
The chapter watched the first part of a five part series of the national EAA video about the inner workings of a chapter. The first segment was about ten minutes long and it talked about the reasons for incorporating the chapter.
Directions: Take the Lewis and Clark bridge to Rainier. Take hwy 30 west. Pass two view points and turn right on Wonderly Road. The Trenner's place is 57226 Wonderly Road. Their phone number is 556-9014.
If you would like a ride or if you would like to follow along, we will be carpooling from the FBO at 7:00.

Meetings are usually held the first Thursday of the Month, 7:00 p.m. They are held at Kelso Flying Service located on the east side of the Kelso airport. Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend!
February's board meeting will be held at the Kelso FBO. Jim Ylvisaker has requested a special discussion on the fly-outs. Anyone interested in helping with the fly-outs this year is encouraged to attend. We will also be discussing the EAA insurance documentation we will need to fill out with respect to our current hangar. The board meeting will be at 6:00 p.m and is open to all members.
Along with reviewing the work Gary and Ruth are doing on their Lancair 360, we will be watching another installment of the EAA Chapter video from the national headquarters. We will be consuming the video in small, easily digested chunks over the next few meetings.
The January meeting included a round of project updates:
Mark Edwards has installed his windshield.
Gary Trenner cut out his panel.
Roble Anderson has redesigned and run th ecables for his rudder.
Jim Y has pulled the gas tank from the Maule to search for a leak. The leak was in the line, not the tank. The tank is to be steam cleaned. The fuselage is in Astoria being prepped, primed and covered. New floor boards are in Jim's shop. Engine is out. The compression looks really good on all cylinders but one.
Bill Pieper has remote tank valves installed. the top cowling has been fitted.
Leon got his instrument panel back from Lancair and sent it back to fix a list of things he was not satisfied with. He is currently trying to work around not having his panel by installing the battery, emergency battery and autopilot servos.
Sam and Sandi have been working on their cowling.
Keith Hamilton says the break-in of his new pistons is going well.
News Bulletin from Elephant's Breath, MN
Minnesota's worst air disaster occurred earlier today when a Cessna 152 crashed into a Norwegian Lutheran cemetery here early this morning. Ole and Sven, working as search and rescue workers, have recovered 826 bodies so far, and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the evening.
