From the President

Dear Fellow EAA Friends and Members,

I was my plan to be a part of the Fly- In on June 8, but I will be in the hospital on the mend.

For the past several months, I have felt like I was operating on “reduced power” and was easily winded if I did some extra exertion. Since I have a history of asthma, I thought this might be acting up more.

Tests of my heart showed the main muscles and valves to be strong and fully working, but certain arteries were showing a reduced function. The diagnosis had no simple fix like an angioplasty (balloon stretch of the artery) or stents, which are left in place to hold the arteries open.

So…. June 5th is heart by-pass surgery day in Vancouver. I will ask Mark Edwards to host the June 6th meeting and Fernando to talk about the fly-in details. Up until June 5th, I can still lead a normal life but with limits on high exertion activity. For me, this surgery is a must, as the long term options only go downhill to a condition that may exclude me from ever getting a 3rd class medical. The sudden departure of Herb Wainwright is convincing to me to not delay checking with the doctor. Anyone else out there have a bit of shortness of breath and mild chest pain? Check it out before you check out!

This surgery will put my 3rd class medical on the shelf until my heart function meets FAA medical specs. Since I am also an AOPA member, I am going to do a thorough research with their help to be sure I cover all the medical paperwork bases, and get the medical reinstated as soon as I can.

This summer, I will be doing plenty of RV-4 polishing and some upgrade work that I always delayed. If you see my ship in the air in June, July,??, it will NOT be me at the controls, as it may be flown by a qualified pilot just to keep it limbered up.

Plane Thoughts

Tail-wheel BFR Endorsement

In early May, I know my Biennial Flight Review (BFR) was coming up in June. Before I had the completed the scheduled medical tests, I decide to get the BFR out of the way. Good thing I did, as now my logbook is good for two years, even if my medical may be on hold as of today.

In years past, demanded that I use my RV-4 for a BFR. This is fully legal, but with a catch. The instructor giving me the BFR must be tail-wheel endorsed, who are hard to come by. (How ironic, since my plane has no rudder pedals for the passenger / instructor.) Evergreen Airfield has such instructors on hand who will give you the BFR in your plane, including the tail-draggers. At a future meeting, one of these instructors may come to visit us due to her interest in EAA.

George Robertson's Davis-4

"I talked to George on May 27th about the sale of his plane. He would make a good deal to someone in the chapter. The engine is fresh majored and a new prop is provided. If a prospective buyer can acquire the services of an A&P, the engine and nosegear could be re-installed by the buyer, the plane given a complete condition inspection by the A&P, and flown to its new home. NOTE, this means the A&P has determined the aircraft to be airworthy, not just looked at! FYI, only the original builder with a repairman's certificate or an A&P or higher rated inspector can perform the condition inspection for the life of the aircraft. --Jerry"

Minutes/Notes From Last Meeting

Board Meeting Notes

Jerry was not present as he was enjoying Southern Oregon with his wife.

The board meeting was held at 6:00 at the FBO. Four members present (Al, Mark, Fernando and Eric).

Al presented the financial figures: $43.39 in checking, $3622.14 in the building fund, $7115.83 in CD. Al said he would bring up the vote in the meeting to roll over the CD. Al also expressed the desire to transfer money to the checking acocunt in preparation for the fly-in.

The remainder of the meeting revolved around the fly-in. The city work on the south ramp was discussed and the board decided to keep a close eye on the proceedings in order to make last minute decisions as the work progresses. The Young Eagles committee is looking for more airplanes for rides. The raffle tickets still have not been found but the trailer still has not been searched. In general, Fernando is doing a great job of organizing the positions and responsibilities.

Two new members showed up as will be discussed below.

Club Meeting Minutes

17 members present as the meeting was called to order at 7:00 at the FBO.

The potential wrinkle in the fly-in was discussed. As stated above, the fly-in committee will keep a close eye on the proceedings in order to expedite any last minute decisions that may need to be made.

The finances were disclosed. Robel made the motion to move $500 from savings to checking, Bob Taylor seconded, all ayes, no nays. Sam Archer moved to roll over the CD to another CD, Mark seconded, all ayes, no nays.

Jim Y. discussed the latest from the fly-out committee. The poker run is coming up Saturday, May 11th. There will be a pilot briefing at 9:30 at the Kelso FBO. Since there were not enough interested parties, the group fly-in to Tsunia lake was called off. Jim announced his intention to step down in a couple of months as the fly-out chairman.

Fernando gave an update as to the proceedings of the fly-in. Please refer to the board meeting minutes for more details.

Two new members were introduced. Scott Hancock and Dan Hall. Welcome, gentlemen!!!

George Robertson announced his desire to sell his Davis airplane. More details to come, or contact George directly.

The Program

The floor was handed over to Mr Norris Hibbler, the owner of the Prescott Pusher. Norris is the CEO of Hibbler Aviation Aircraft & Marine Assurance. Norris gave an excellent talk on the current state of aircraft insurance, his Prescott Pusher, and the need for all of us to support our aviation community as much as possible. Mr Hibbler can be reached for further discussion at 360-694-1303.

Calendar of events

Next Meeting: Thursday, June 6th at the FBO in Kelso.

Meetings are usually held the first Thursday of the Month,  7:00 p.m. Unless otherwise noted, they are held at Kelso Flying Service located on the east side of the Kelso airport. Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend!

Board Meeting

The board meeting will be held at the FBO at 6:00. All are welcome.

Upcoming Program

The June meeting will concentrate on the upcoming Fly-in.

"I got a call from John Criderman who is building a Rebel. He may be at the meeting on Thursday and will bring his photos. Please give him a spot of time so he can bring the group up to date. He is going to need help with the engine installation plumbing and electrical later this year. I will have some free time I suppose.." ---Jerry.

Tech Visits / Project Updates

In mid-May, I paid a visit to Fernando Cuglievan’s RV-8 at his home shop. This project has come together so nicely. The ship is painted, the engine installed, and connections from firewall to engine are being made. This plane is getting close to flying!

Now it is Fernando’s turn to prepare for flight. He is investigating the tail-wheel training and endorsement and must complete his lessons, so he can do his thing. Speaking of tail-wheel endorsement, read on. (please refer to the Plane Thoughts Section)

Misc Points

Results from the third Poker Run, hosted by Chapter EAA1111 and Kelso Flight Service

I guess the third time is a charm because after two marginal flying days for the poker run the last two years, this year we hit on a beautiful weather day. Eight people in four planes participated. Leon and Betty Smith with passenger Bob Jones in Leon's C-182, Bob Taylor and Roble Anderson in Bob's C-172, Ted Dvorak from Scappoose in his Starduster biplane, and Bob Burgess and Jim Ylvisaker in Jim's C172.

After getting our first card at Kelso, destinations were Pearson, Sportsman (Newberg), Salem and McMinnville. After lunch at Salem we all arrived safely at McMinnville where we visited the Evergreen Museum, taking in the quite awesome spectacle of the Spruce Goose and all the other antique aircraft on display there, and then repaired to the lunch room to determine the winning hands. We attracted some curious looks from other customers of the Museum coffee shop as we compared our hands and counted out the pot to the winners. Evidently nobody called the gambling police because we finished our business without getting arrested. The game was "high/low, split the pot" and Jim's passenger, Bob Burgess from Portland took high with a flush while Leon Smith paid his gas bill with an 8 high low hand.

This was a fun event but we could have used a bigger pot with more participants. Thanks to our hardy Australian adventurers Leon, Betty and Bob for going on this fly-out even though they were just hours back from very grueling flight home. Thanks also to our co-sponsor, Kelso Flight Services who did the flyer and helped promote the event.

-Jim Ylvisaker
