From the President

NEXT MEETING JULY 11TH

Since the 4th of July would be our normal meeting night, this will most likely conflict with holiday plans you have made with family and friends.

Therefore, our next meeting will be the 2nd Thursday, July 11th, at the FBO. I am asking the board, along with Fernando, Sam and Sandy, and Bob Taylor, to arrive by 6 p.m. so we can spend some time reviewing the Fly In and Young Eagles in planning for next year. If you are not able to attend (maybe you will be at Arlington), then I ask that you E-mail me your comments and suggestions before July 11th.

For the regular meeting at 7 p.m., it is possible that we will have an Arlington report from the day before, as I know of some going up for the first day. We will also take a look at our video regarding chapter responsibilities.

The President's Status Following Surgery:
I am feeling a bit impatient and would like to be fully well and resume flying, but these things take time and patience. On July 3rd, my driving privileges will be restored. The flying will take a bit longer. Because of heart surgery, the medical is automatically suspended for a minimum of six months. Then, the medical can only be reinstated following a number of heart condition tests. The resultant reports will be forwarded to FAA Medical Staff in Oklahoma, then wait some more.

Plane Thoughts

ALL CHOKED UP
About a month ago, when I was still flying, I went to Tillamook in a flight of two with Jim McClellan. Upon departure at Tillamook, I noted roughness during run up, but was able to obtain smooth running when leaning a bit. I assumed possible plug fouling, but this was still unusual.

I took off and climbed to 7,000 feet over Tillamook to be sure I had an airport under me in case the roughness returned. The engine was still rough at full rich mixture, but at 7,000 feet, leaning is a must for best power and smoothness anyway. So with careful leaning, I proceeded to Kelso with Jim flying along side as observer.

Upon landing and shut down, I looked in the air intake. There was a cellophane gum wrapper sitting in the intake! On run-up at Tillamook, I had sucked this into the carburetor. My RV-4 has direct ram air with no filter, so this undesirable opportunity existed and partially choked the engine creating a very rich mixture. The piece of cellophane had lodged itself against the venturi and then fell back out once the intake vacuum was gone.

Thinking back on the whole problem, I should have been more attentive to examining the engine by shutting down at Tillamook and doing another visual inspection prior to take-off. Life has its lessons, and this was another one.

Minutes/Notes From Last Meeting

Board Meeting Notes

13 present, 4 of them officers.

The discussions went straight to the Fly-in. Although it came across as somewhat chaotic, the various members had a good handle on their tasks and things came together.

Club Meeting Minutes

21 present including officers.

Finances show $416.13 in checking, $3910.62 in savings, and $7140.78 in the CD.

The June meeting concentrated on the annual fly-in. The Archers announced they had 65 kids preregistered for Young Eagles. They looked ready to go. Bob Taylor had his items checked off and he was ready as well. A few small items were still needed for the concession trailer and volunteers were quick to respond. The car drivers have been notified and invited. The sanitation issues have been taken care of. It was agreed a small group of people would be at the airport on Friday evening to help set up.

Bev moved to send flowers to Jerry, there were many seconds. It was done. Jerry is doing well!! Although he is in lots of pain and his recovery will be rough, he is doing well. Jerry was to have gone home from teh hospital on Monday or Tuesday (June 10/11). Flowers were sent to his home from the Chapter.

The Aussie group is back and had an EXCELLENT experience. We look forward to seeing a presentation!

George mentioned the sale of his Davis. See the classifieds for more info...

Jim McClellan gave a radio story about how he solved the problem of his transponder 'firing' static into his radio.

Classifieds

Please Note!!! All classifieds will start to bear a date. After they have been in the newsletter for 3 publications, they will be moved to the classifieds section of the EAA 1111 web page. Thank you in advance for alerting the editor when and if your ad can be removed.

Buy, Sell, and Swap your stuff here!!! Please keep your editor informed of any status changes for the following listings.

1/5 partnership in a 172!!!
1960 Cessna 172 with 220 HP Franklin engine. One fifth ownership based at Kelso. $30/hr wet tach. Around $600 year fixed costs including hangar, insurance and annual. You cannot fly for less!! This is a really nice Cessna, IFR certified and very low time on the engine and a real rocket ship. Hartzell constant speed prop. Hangared nearly its entire life. One of the owners bought the airplane new in 1960 and it has been exceptionally well cared for. I'm asking $7500. Call Dan Hall at 360-225-9042posted 17JUN02

George Robertson is wanting to sell his Davis
Built by Harmon Lange. George has about $6k invested in the engine rebuild and is interested really in recouping those costs. He would be interested in making a deal with someone from the chapter. More info to come from Jerry. "I will call George Robertson about his plane. I know he wants to sell it and I think it could be easily flown out of Scapoose with only a weekend of engine installation and run up check. If I am able to talk to him soon, I will sumarize the sales pitch in the newsletter. --Jerry"

"I talked to George on May 27th about the sale of his plane. He would make a good deal to someone in the chapter. The engine is fresh majored and a new prop is provided. If a prospective buyer can acquire the services of an A&P, the engine and nosegear could be re-installed by the buyer, the plane given a complete condition inspection by the A&P, and flown to its new home. NOTE, this means the A&P has determined the aircraft to be airworthy, not just looked at! FYI, only the original builder with a repairman's certificate or an A&P or higher rated inspector can perform the condition inspection for the life of the aircraft. --Jerry" posted 01JUN02

Leon Smith is selling a dimmer controller from Vans and an altitude switch to alert the pilot when a chosen altitude is passed.
