This past month, I had the chance to get off the ground, but not as pilot in command. Still, I really appreciate the opportunity to fly at all. Even though I did not make it to Arlington as planned, the preparation for the flight and the contact to FSS was a good refresher.
Going to Arlington or anywhere north of Seattle requires some study to be alert to the Class B airspace, the military operations areas and now the temporary flight restriction (TFR) areas which seem to be permanent.
The recent AOPA magazine covered the importance of staying out of the TFRs. On the east coast, there have been violations so frequent that many of the federal agencies who want to protect us are thinking of the big sledge hammer treatment to take care of a few gnats. Remember when we could not fly VFR in the enhanced airspace near Seattle? I counted plenty of airports that private pilots had no access to. (OK, so I counted the seaplane bases too ).
To avoid a repeat of more government regulation, it is very important to understand where the restrictions are and to stay out or high over it, so we don't add to the list of reasons why more regualtions are needed. While it takes some time to hear the story, the 1-800 WX- BRIEF at Flight Service is a good resource to get the latest restrictions and NOTAMS. Its a free call and you dont have to talk to anybody if you just want to listen to the recordings.
Eric, Please put this in the next newsletter. We are invited to fly to Pierce County for a Burger Burn on August 13 @ 6 PM. This would be a great "fly-out" event for or EAA members. --Jerry
To All Western Washington EAA Chapters
We would enjoy your company at our annual pot luck affair on August 13th at Thun Field (1S0). This is a Tuesday, our normal meeting night, and food will be ready at 6 PM.
No need to bring anything...we will have plenty of food. If you fly in, park along the taxiway at the south end.
Please spread the word.

We had a debrief of the Fly-in. More details to follow in club meeting minutes since much of the information was repeated there.
16 members present including 4 officers.
The treasurer posted the financials, but that information was lost on my Palm Pilot. I will get those numbers for July and add them posthumously. We wrote Jay Tabor a check for $103.08 for the trophies he had made. The chapter made $224 from the raffle and $109.16 from the concession stand. Bob Taylor gave a detailed financial report from the hot dog stand.
Sam and Sandi printed some of the digital photos they took of the Young Eagles event and brought them to the meeting for all to see.
We have been approached by a local Boy Scout leader to coordinate an event, perhaps in September, similar to an informal Young Eagles event. We had hoped he would come to the July meeting to further discuss, but was not able to make it.
Jerry mentioned the need to fill Jim Ylvisaker's position as the Fly-out Chair. Jim announced his desire to resign from the position. We will need someone to take charge of the August overnighter.
An article in the paper thanking us for the Young Eagles fly-out was read to the chapter.
The hangar topic was brought to the surface again when a mamber asked for clarity as to the meaning of the 'building fund' segment of the financial report.
There was a brief discussion on the Unrein/'Restless' crash. Paul walked away from it, but the plane was heavily damaged. Paul claims to now have an abundance of parts for his second project already in progress.
The remainder of the meeting was a debrief of the Fly-in/Young Eagles event. A plus/delta poll was taken and God was held primarly responsible as our weather was less than optimal. We should also put the concession stand closer to the Young Eagles desk to create greater food sales. Candy might be a nice addition to the concession stand. The Young Eagles portion of the Fly-in was a huge success and extremely well managed by the Archers. Bob agreed to manage the concession stand again next year.
We watched another segment of the EAA chapter video. The important message EAA HQ was trying to get across in this segment was to make sure you pay your national dues, not just your local chapter dues.
We discussed meeting at Fernando's place for the August meeting to review his project.
Hopefully we will have a presentation from the folks who took the trip to Australia for the September program.
Meetings are usually held the first Thursday of the Month, 7:00 p.m. Unless otherwise noted, they are held at Kelso Flying Service located on the east side of the Kelso airport. Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend!
Board Meeting
The board meeting will be held at the FBO at 6:00 on the same evening as the regular meeting. All are welcome.
Please remember to bring some chairs to Fernando's house if you can.
We will be visiting Fernando's RV project after the normal business meeting. Attached are three maps. The first map is a large scale which shows the Kelso airport in the upper left corner as reference. Exit I-5 at the Tenant Way Exit and take the Old Pacific Highway South (you will want to stay on the East side of the interstate.

Take Rose Valley Road East to Derek Drive.

Go North on Derek Drive... Bingo.
166 Derek Drive is the target.

Bob Taylor has unpacked his project and is about to take a class in Arlington on the construction of his Glastar.
Tech Visit to Leon Smiths Project
Leon has progressed to the firewall work, making the connections from the engine to the panel. The Lancair company sells some very nice metal firewall Grommets that are designed to securely hold cables and fluid lines that pass through.
Another nice feature is the use of the electrical quick-disconnect plugs for the bundles of engine sensors. This gives the installation a military appearance and keeps the engine compartment very tidy.
If any of you are preparing to install and engine that will require all the control and sensor connections, a trip to Leons will be well worth your while
George
Robertson is wanting to sell his Davis
Built by Harmon Lange. George has about $6k invested in
the engine rebuild and is interested really in recouping those
costs. He would be interested in making a deal with someone from
the chapter. More info to come from Jerry. "I will call
George Robertson about his plane. I know he wants to sell it and
I think it could be easily flown out of Scapoose with only a
weekend of engine installation and run up check. If I am able to
talk to him soon, I will sumarize the sales pitch in the
newsletter. --Jerry"
"I talked to George on May 27th about the sale of his plane. He would make a good deal to someone in the chapter. The engine is fresh majored and a new prop is provided. If a prospective buyer can acquire the services of an A&P, the engine and nosegear could be re-installed by the buyer, the plane given a complete condition inspection by the A&P, and flown to its new home. NOTE, this means the A&P has determined the aircraft to be airworthy, not just looked at! FYI, only the original builder with a repairman's certificate or an A&P or higher rated inspector can perform the condition inspection for the life of the aircraft. --Jerry" posted 01JUN02
Leon Smith is selling a dimmer controller from Vans and an altitude switch to alert the pilot when a chosen altitude is passed.
Tales from the Control Towers:
The controller working a busy pattern told the 727 on downwind to
make a 360. The pilot of the 727 complained, "Do you know it
costs us two thousand dollars to turn this airplane around?"
Without missing a beat the controller replied, "Roger, give
me four thousand dollars' worth."
PSA was following United, taxiing out for departure. PSA called
the tower and said "Tower, this is United 586. We've got a
little problem, so go ahead and let PSA go first." The tower
promptly cleared PSA for takeoff before United had a chance to
object to the impersonation.
A DC-10 had an exceedingly long landing rollout after landing
with his approach speed just a little too high... San Jose Tower:
"American 751 Heavy, turn right at the end if able. If not
able, take the Guadalupe exit off of Highway 101 back to the
airport."
Tower: "Eastern 702, cleared for takeoff, contact Departure
on 124.7"
Eastern 702: "Tower, Eastern 702 switching to Departure...
by the way, as we lifted off we saw some kind of dead animal on
the far end of the runway."
Tower: "Continental 635, cleared for takeoff, contact
Departure on 124.7... did you copy the report from Eastern?"
Continental 635: "Continental 635, cleared for takeoff...
and yes, we copied Eastern and we've already notified our
caterers."
O'Hare Approach Control: "United 329, traffic is a Fokker,
one o'clock, 3 miles, eastbound."
United 329: "Approach, I've always wanted to say this...
I've got that Fokker in sight."

Dues are $24.00 per year. If you join midyear, they are pro-rated $2.00 per month. Send dues to treasurer Al Drewry. Include your National EAA number, as the Chapter 1111 bylaws require it for membership.
Now that we have our own domain on the web www.eaa1111.com,we have lots of room for pictures and such. Please don't be shy and let's get some pictures of projects published!!! If anyone has anything they would like to share, (a nice trip, lessons learned from flying or building, project status, or whatever) please dont be shy. I would love to work with you to get your thoughts and ideas published. Your contributions make the editors job much easier and it makes for a better newsletter.
