EAA Headquarters has provided me with the 2003 update forms for our chapter. EAA always asks what we do about a meeting space. If we borrow a facility, it is one insurance rate. If we own a facility, obviously it is another rate.
Which brings to mind we have a long-term goal of an on-airport building with meeting space and hangars. To afford this requires an initial investment, and we continue to slowly add to this.
For 2003, we will plan more activities that will add to our "down payment". One of the first items we are considering is the freeway rest area coffee and cookie service that has the benefit of public relations and donations.
We also plan on a membership drive for 2003. While we do not make much on dues, additional members become that many more resources of ideas and help in all that we do.
My thanks to all of you who provided your time, airplanes, tools, and vehicles, and money towards the various events.
Thanks to Jim Ylvisaker who got some aviation public relations in the Tuesday Nov 26 Longview Daily News. The article was brief, but included a great picture of Jim in flight at the controls. (The person taking the picture from the front cockpit hoped Jim was at the controls.)
Mike Lewis has a new way to arrive at the airport, flying low and feeling high. Check it out on rain free days only.
5 officers present plus Karen Fenton
Treasury report: Checking Acct $189.20, Building Acct $2094.17, CD $9266.32
We talked about the annual dinner at the Mansion. We need to make sure all the funds are accounted for from dinner. There was a surprise $41 for setup charge which we feel was a bit shady. Mike and Bev will follow up on trying to get that refunded. Al says he is ok with the books. A couple of members haven't paid for their dinners yet. Jerry will contact them.
Jerry produced a chapter activities survey. It was from EAA HQ and listed ideas for activities a chapter could do throughout the year. We discussed it, checked off the items we normally do, and checked off items we would like to do.
Fly-in chair for 2003: Fernando is the candidate. He was being groomed last year and should be hitting his stride this year. He should choose a potential apprentice to learn the ropes this year to take over in the future.
Young Eagles: Sam & Sandi did such a fantastic job last year and they expressed interest in doing it again...
Fly-out chair: Leon? JMcClellan? We will discuss further at the Chapter meeting.
Rest area fund raising deal: We need club approval to fill out form & procede.
We want to officially recognize Karen as the Chapter Historian. We will bring it up before the club for a vote.
We discussed ideas for project visits and potential programa for December.
16 present including officers
Treasurer gave his report. Details above in Board minutes.
The 2003 calendars are for sale. We are making a very small margin on these and really need to try to sell them all this year. We got them earlier than last year to help.
We reviewed the EAA HQ Activities Survey mentioned in the Board minutes above.
Visitors to the meeting: Leo Ripplinger and Joe Henessey.
We discussed another project visit to Leon's plane. He was amenable.
We discussed the fund raising activity at the rest area. There is a good amount of interest in the chapter. Some reservations, though as people are willing to donate the money to the chapter directly in lieu of donating time to work the coffee stand. We are still planning to go forward with this idea.
The board recommended Karen Fenton officially as the chapter historian. The motion was seconded by??. A vote was taken: All aye no nay
Tech report: There was some discussion on the latest status of Sam and Sandi's project.
Talk of the 2003 fly-in was officially opened. Fernando was named as the best potential chair with Sam and Sandi taking on the Young Eagles again. Things really need to be instigated now as we are 'only' 7-8 months away from the big day.
We discussed using Leon or Jim McClellan as a fly-out director. Leon said he would be happy to do it, but his plans included moving to Independance this summer so he couldn't commit to the position. Jim was not present for comment.
Karen Fenton announced the discovery of rats in her hangar. Everyone should keep a look out in their hangars. Since Karen's hangar is adjacent to the old diner, this may be the food source attracting the varmints. It must be time to get some field cats!
There was some discussion on the 51% rule and other legalities of home building as a member was confused on what it means.
There was finally some light discussion on project updates.
"When I first started this column I had hoped to include original members first. As it is turning out, Im simply going to feature the people I get answers from first. To those people I owe a debt of thanks.
Often on sees a tall, blond headed, slightly balding (his word, not mine. He says it's because of his three brothers) gentleman around the airport. Charlie Rosenzweig is a local product, having graduated from R. A. Long and Lower Columbia College. While interesting to meet and talk to on the field, many of us would be a little frightened to meet him in his official capacity as Chief Criminal Deputy for Cowitz County Sheriffs office, where he has worked for 25 years. His girl friend, working on her nursing degree and a hopeful future pilot, is Sandi Anderson. Several of us have had the opportunity to meet her at some of the meetings." --Karen Fenton

Charlie had a rather interesting
introduction into aviation. He says My
father was a B-17 pilot during WW11. He flew with the
95th Bomb Group of the 8th Airforce out of Europe. His
group has the distinction of being the first BG to bomb
Berlin. He is still alive and in great health. We have
about 7 hours of his WW11 experiences on cassette
tape. A flight in a C-185 out of Talkeetna Air Service up to and landing on Mt. McKinley at about the 7000 foot level was the best vacation he and Sandi have taken. They had a clear day and got lots of photos of the experience. His most rewarding experience was being able to spread his mothers ashes over their favorite family vacation spot, Birch Bay. His brother was with him and the sunset was perfect. |
| While he would enjoy owning the dream
Bell 222 helicopter and possibly doing more aerobatics,
his passion has been to convert an auto engine for his
RV-6A project. He says, I have studied auto engine
conversions for about 16 years. I have spent years
reading different auto engine newsletters and
participating in Internet news groups and traveling
around talking to people who have done this and realize
that there is quite the underground society
of experimental aviation who are interested in auto
engine conversions, that is quite surprising. It
disappoints me to hear people say that auto engine
conversions are all death waiting to happen. Although it
is clearly an added risk, there have been hundreds of
success stories of auto engine planes flying for years
with little or no problems. I am using a Toyota 4 cyl
engine for my project. I have built my own prop reduction
gear box. I hope to get the engine up and running this
winter some time. He enjoys building for its
combination of art and engineering that come together in
a very unique and rewarding way. Charlie also appreciates
the fact that so many great people are willing to help
and become a part of your project. So any of you interested in auto conversion, Charlies the man to see! |

Board Meeting
At the airport, same day but one hour earlier than the regular club meeting.
We will be leaving from the FBO and traveling the short distance to Leon Smith's home to view the latest progress on his Lancair ES.
The calendars are here! The calendars are here!
The 2003 calendars are available. There
are two models: a desktop model and a wall hanging model. We are
selling them for $15 and $12 respectively. Both can be purchased
for $25. These will make GREAT Christmas presents and are a
required display in every shop. They are a must have for anyone
who is interested in knowing what day it is!

As our airliner pushed back from the gate, the flight attendant gave the passengers the usual information regarding seat belts etc. Finally, she said "Now sit back and enjoy your trip while your captain, Judith Campbell, and crew take you safely to your destination."
An older man sitting in the 8th row mumbled to himself, "Did I hear her right; is the captain a woman? I think I better have a whiskey and water."
When the flight attendant came by with the drink cart, he
said, "Did I understand you right, the captain a
woman?"
"Yes," said the attendant, "In fact the entire
crew is female."
"My God," said the man, "I'd better have two whiskeys and water. I don't know what to think of all those women up there in the cockpit."
"That's another thing," said the attendant, "We no longer call it the cockpit....Now it's the box office."
