From the President

Annual Meeting and Dinner
The annual meeting will be held at the mansion again this year. The date is Friday, October 24th. Bev is confirming the cost and menu details. Bring your check books or cash for advance payment of October banquet.

ANOTHER EXPERIMENTAL MAKE MAKES KELSO HOME
Pilot Leo Luyt, of Longview, has just flown a Velocity from Florida and now bases the aircraft in the “C” hangar at Kelso.
The Velocity is a composite canard four place cruiser with fixed gear. Leo has brought it here in the “primer” condition and has final sanding and prep work to do before painting.
Cruise across the U.S. was done at a comfortable 150 knots. I think once the slick finish is applied, the speed will pick up some more.
I invited Leo to our September meeting. He has already met a few of our members and he is delighted to get acquainted.
FYI, it took a little over a year for Leo pop up on the hangar waiting list.

EAA Chapter 1 at FLABOB Airport Celebrating 50th Anniversary
This EAA chapter is having a big celebration on September 20th. Paul Poberezny will host the dedication of their new 70’ x 100’ hangar / meeting room.
As part of this dedication, we are also invited to purchase a commemorative brick for placement in the Pioneer Plaza. While we may not be able o attend, we can have a brick inscribed with something we feel is worthwhile. The executive board will review this opportunity and present a recommendation to the Chapter.

Plane Thoughts

From Jerry---> The attached comes from resource files at EAA HQ. I have looked at this before, but now it becomes a more important tool in examining the "condo" hangars being proposed at Kelso. I am thinking about a comment sheet for our paid up members, regarding the condo idea.
* How many members plan to go with their own hangar arrangements and would not enter into the condo agreement?
* Are members willing to have dues increased to help pay for condo?
* Should we have a full length unit that allows a plane on one end and clubhouse meeting area kitchen / bathroom/ phone on the other?
* Should we stage kitchen improvements as funds allow to support fly in breakfasts/ lunches?
* What to do wirth current facilties on northwest corner?
Should payment be structured for those that use facilities to keep planes or project storage?
Your thoughts..........
There is also an existing building committee in effect and I will have to see who is on board. Whatever we do, we should include this committee or to update it.

Please see the Chapter Events page for details about more Fly-Ins before the summer is over.

Also... Please check out the link to the Primer on Chapter Hangars. This is a very long document so it will not be distributed in hardcopy unless specifically requested in order to save money and resources.

New Business:
Jim proposed we make the most of the bicentennial year of flight. Public interest in aviation will be large, our chapter has put lots of planes on the line. Why not make a video of the chapter in celebration? KLTV could be used as a resource in some capacity to make video. For a small fee they could provide equipment advise. Jim will call John Glasco to get more info. We could promote the club, general avaition, etc.

Club Meeting

Tom Stanton and Bill Halowell were new guests.

Member Profile

Dear members:
Thanks so much for your co-operation in giving me information for biographies. I have now contacted every member at least once. Rather than "bug" you any more, click here for the questions. You can then either write you own info, or e-mail it on to me for a write up.

Thanks.

Answer as many of these as you wish. Add material if you want. You can write narrative and I’ll go ahead and do a little editing if needed, otherwise just give me the answers and I’ll write the story.

Basic biographical information
Where were you born?
Where did you go to school?
How many brothers and sisters did you have?
Who is you spouse or significant other?
How many children/grandchildren do you have?
What is your profession?
What was your most satisfying family vacation.

Flying things
Why and when did you start flying?
Have you ever scared yourself and how?
What has your most awesome experience in a plane been? (this could be a sunset, sunrise, sudden climb, etc.
If you could choose, with money no limit, your ideal plane what would it be?
What do you find most satisfying about flying?
Do you have any goals relating to flying in the future?
What route would your fantasy long cross country take?

Builder's viewpoint ( if applicable)
What do you find most satisfying about building?
What contacts have you made as a result of building which surprised you?
What is your goal in building?
When building is the old adage about the planning is more than the journey true?

Thanks so much.

N63LS FLIGHT TESTS -- from Leon Smith

Lancair N63LS, Super ES, despite its poor paint job, flies beautifully. On Thursday Aug. 14 at about 10:30am, Mike DeHate, Lancair contract pilot took it up for the first time and flew around for 20 min. CHTs on #2 & #6 were a little high during climb out (416 deg) but cooled down quickly after leveling off. Later in the day I made 2 flights, the first about an hour and the second about 20 min. With ground temp. at 90 deg. the #6 CHT got up to around 438 deg. but again cooled down quickly after leveling off.
The second day, Friday, weather was not good with ceiling around 2000 ft. I did get up for another 20 min flight but with the low ceiling and all the traffic over KLS headed for the McMinnville fly-in I just didn’t feel comfortable. Cool day so CHT stayed under 400 deg.
We left Sat. the 16th for a weeks vacation at Lake Shasta returning on Sat. the 23rd
I got back in the air yesterday with Keith Hamilton and his wife in their RV 6A trying to take a few pictures. With almost a 30 knot difference in airspeed it was a challenge but managed to get a few shots. Flew for little over 2 hours. Back in the air today for another 2 hrs for a total of 6.7 hrs.

Some observations:
• Engine is running well with little or no vibration. Very smooth. Pick up a little vibration when RPM drops down around 2300 or below. It seems to like 2400-2500 better.
• Very stable airplane. Would make a great IFR platform.
• Stall is right at 60 knots and very gentle with no wing drop (the book says 57 kts)
• I’m still using fairly high speed on final (80 kts) till I get more comfortable with the plane.
• Aileron trim tab is too small. Will need to enlarge.
• Also a little shy on up elevator trim at round out. May need adjustments there as well.
• With 24 MP/2500 rpm I get a solid 190 kts or 218 mph.
• Going to Ram Air gives me another inch of MP (25/2500) and a solid 196 kts or 225 mph – just what the book says.
• Most everything in the instrument panel seems to work with a few exceptions;
1. No 2 comm radio is intermittent.
2. Autopilot doesn’t seem to work right, but I haven’t done much reading on its proper use. May be pilot error.
3. Haven’t calibrated the AOA so don’t know if this works or not.
4. Fuel gauges have not been calibrated yet so no fuel gauge read out. I’ve been timing use on each tank and using the fuel flow computer which seems to be fairly accurate.

All things considered, the test flights have gone very well. I will continue to stay pretty close to an airport till I do the first oil change and get at least 10 hrs on the engine. The DAR gave me a 50 nautical mile radius flight test area which I requested be centered over Clatskanie, OR so I’ll be able to go up and down the coast from Manzanita to the North end of Long Beach to fly off my 25 hrs.
Betty and I are looking forward to many, many hours of flying pleasure in N63LS.

And From a Different Tech Angle...
Jerry's Health Update 8-18-03
The latest PET scan shows no more tumors. I am half way through the four part intravenous treatment and the results are “very good” according to the oncologist.
I will have the remainder of the treatments during August 25-30 and September 22-27. I call these the “mop up” treatments to take care of any lymphoma that did not show on the PET scan. If all goes as planned, this will complete my therapy.
There may be one more bone marrow sample taken in October, which is the final check for lymphoma.
I do not know the long-term examination process yet, but I expect some type of reoccurring testing.
I am thankful for the good results and quick response.
