Fly In Reviews
This past month, I made it to the Fly In at Port Angeles. Their
EAA Chapter flew the Young Eagles and also arranged for a number
of display aircraft. The size, multiple runways and layout of the
airport allowed for plenty of car parking and a smooth flowing
operation. Some of what I saw may be applicable to our fly in and
young eagles. we will discuss this at our next exec meeting.
Building RVs at Independence
Jim Ashford, who use to be in the area and hangar his
Zenith here, has since bought a home at Independence Airport. He
recently sold his Zenith and converted some of the cash to an
RV-7 Quick Build kit. On Sept. 20th, I flew there to assist him
with his assembly. This kit is remarkable in how much is finished
or pre-drilled. Jim will soon be leaving for Hawaii, but if you
hurry, he would welcome a visit.
City of Kelso will Advertise for
Hangar Construction
The City of Kelso has decided to advertise for the
construction of three buildings units having 10 nested
T hangars per building. While the word
condominium does not show up in the proposal, it is
the intent of the city to have the builder be the manager to whom
owners would be responsible. I was given opportunity to review
the first draft, and found a number of areas that I recommended
changing. I felt these changes were necessary to provide
flexibility in the use of the buildings and some autonomy is what
is permitted. The request for proposal is yet to come
out, and we will be given a copy.
Exec and Chapter Meeting October
2nd
YES! We will have our regular meeting on Thursday
October 2nd. I am working on a guest speaker
We will also
discuss the Kelso Hangar proposal and details of the Annual
Meeting. Out Guest speaker will be from the Wenatchee EAA Chapter
and he will present the story of the construction and flight of
the Miss Veedol which flew around the world in the
1930s. And it will be done again with the replica! I
happened to be in Wenatchee the day the first flight took place
at Pangborn field. (In 2003 for the replica; not 1931).
Eric Hoppe happened to catch the Wright Brother's story on the Discovery channel. Please let him know if you would like to see it.

Re: PROPOSED VIDEO PROJECT
Sept. 4, 2003
The Proposed Project:
Produce a 30 to 45 minute video presentation in cooperation with KLTV telling the story of Chapter 1111 in conjunction with the nationıs celebration of the anniversary of powered flight.
This project has been discussed with Steve Harvey, Office Manager, KLTV. Steve has much enthusiasm for the project and was amazed that "real" airplanes were being individually built and flown in Cowlitz County. He believes that this story will have high interest to viewers.
KLTV offers the following support:
KLTV will air the program when completed.
Why Do This?
We have an exicting story to tell that is largely unknown in the community. Because of national attention being focused on the anniversary year of powered flight, the community would be especially receptive to a local story. Our Club has recently seen the completion of several fine examples of the builders art - we have great stuff to show off. Not only will the community be informed of what we are doing, copies of the video could be sold to members as what has been accomplished in the ten years since Chpt 1111 incorporated.
Finally, by doing this project, we would be contributing to the larger goal of building public awareness of and respect for general aviation as an important industry.
Cost of Proposed Project:
$50.00 Organization membership in KLTV
Tapes (we could recoup the costs by sales to members)
Project Timeline:
If project is accepted by the Board, a Committee should be formed ASAP. Initial scripting, Video project p. 2 and formatting could be done in Sept. for presentation to the Board in October for their approval.
KLTV Training on use of equipment would be in October.
Actual taping, both on-site and studio would begin late October and continue into November.
Editing and final proofing by Board early December.
Broadcast by KLTV to coincide with anniversary of powered flight, December 17, 2003.
Karen Fenton is retiring as chapter historian. She has evaluated her situation and will be selling her Cessna. She plans to continue flying the rentals out of Kelso.
Board Meeting:
5 officers, 4 members present.
Board reviewed Jim Y's debrief notes about how to handle the fly-in better next year.
Jim Y reported on his research about the club video. He will make a proposal to the chapter as to next steps.
Jerry talked about the hangar condo proposal. We need to get original hangar committee back together to make a decision about what we want to do. We definitely will keep our original hangar. The company proposing the construction of the hangars is making a presentation to the airport board in September. Jerry will plan on being present.
Treasurer reports the following: checking $51.54, building $2825.28, cd $11488.39.
EAA Chapter 1 having 50th anniversary celebration. A proposal will be made to the chapter as to whether or not we will donate $39 for a commemorative brick.
Jerry talked about a bunch of fly-ins coming up this month in the general area. Specifically our personal invitation to the Pt Angeles fly-in.
We have a speaker confirmed for our annual meeting to discuss the latest efforts of the Wenatchee reconstruction of Miss Veedol.
Bev talked about the annual dinner. Everyone must prepay this year directly to Bev, no exceptions. We need to reply by Oct 15 to reserve a spot.
The nominating committee will make a formal proposal to chapter about the officers staying on for another year.
Club Meeting:
5 officers, 16 members, 1 guest (Leo luyt)
Hangar condos. The building committee needs to reform. We as a chapter need to determine what we want to do, and fast. We do not want to be left in the wake of the potential building activity being proposed to the city and airport. The city has made no moves yet. The condo company will make a presentation to the airport board this month. Jerry will be present. It looks like the city will make a call for competitive bids.
Treasurer's report was reviewed. No additional interest earned since the board meeting.
Jerry talked of the list of upcoming fly-ins in the general area.
Jim Y is the chair of the nominating committee. The committee proposed to the chapter that the current batch of offivers continue on for another year. Discussion ensued, motion was made, motion was seconded, all voted aye.
Bev talked about the annual dinner at the Rutherglen Mansion on October 24th. the price is $28 per person. Everyone must prepay this year directly to Bev, no exceptions. We need to reply by Oct 15 to reserve a spot. It should be noted that the price includes gratuity. Cocktails at the open bar will begin at 6:00, dinner will be at 7:00. the menu will be:
Roasted Prime Rib
Roasted Pork Loin with Chipolte Mango Chutney
Salmon Oscar with a Champagne White Sauce
Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Steamed Garden Vegetables
Caesar Salad
Garden Bow Tie Pasta Salad
Angel Hair and Crab Salad
Fresh Vegetable Platter
Fresh Fruit Platter
Rolls, Coffee, Tea, Cola and Dessert
The donation to EAA Chapter 1 for a commemorative brick in celebration of their 50th anniversary was introduced, discussed and unanimously voted down.
Jim Y presented his findings about the possibilities of partnering with KLTV to create a chapter video. The video would serve to promote general aviation by informing the public about some of the interesting things that are happening right under their noses at the Kelso airport. KLTV has agreed to help us out. We will need 4-5 people from chapter to get it done. A small fee will be paid to the station and in return, they will lend us their equipment and knowledge. Discussion, motion, second, all aye. Initial names of people who could help out...BobTaylor, Roble Anderson, Leon Smith, Jim Ylvisaker.
Jerry talked about Henry's F-15 intercept. Unfortunately, Henry was not available for comment.
Leo Luyt talked his flying history and how he came to be the proud owner of a Velocity. Leo then opened his hangar for the chapter to examine his project.

Program:
Our Guest Speaker at the October 2nd EAA Chapter 1111 meeting will be Mike Houtchens who is the AP and AI mechanic on the NW corner of the field.
Mike recently sent out a mailer that described his services. Some of you may want his professional services for your certified or experimental project.
He will bring photos of experimentals that he has installed fireall forward and instrument panels. These are trophy ships too.
If you are intending to build an experimental but want to keep the engine and prop combination as certified, Mike can offer services that should give you only a 25 hour phase 1 flight restriction rather than 40 hours. ( FAR's cover this. The details are too many to try to describe here.)
