EVERGREEN AIRPORT EDGES TOWARDS CLOSURE

We have heard for years that the Evergreen Airport was only a few months from closure but now it seems much closer.

On Monday, February 9, I flew to Evergreen to find out if the instructor who previously gave me the biennial flight review was still there. I will need another BFR this spring to stay current.

What I found was the Evergreen Flying Service hangar doors closed, no flight instruction offered, and no fuel available. However, the FBO office was open and Cheryl Olsen, Wally’s daughter, was there to offer help and a cup of coffee.

While the property has not apparently been sold, the 90 day notice to vacate makes the situation impractical for anyone to come in and attempt to establish a business. The J-3 Cubs and the Cessna’s that were used for training are now for sale.

As much as I do not like the idea, it may be best that the airport close. There is just no room left to make an emergency landing due to the high density of buildings everywhere around the airport. This is not the Evergreen I knew 37 years ago when I learned to fly here. Before it is gone, drive or fly to Evergreen and log it in your memory banks. At the FBO office, look in the display case which has been turned into a small memorial to Wally Olsen.

EAA Honors “10 for 2003” Young Eagles Pilots
The latest issue of Sport Aviation included a world wide list of those pilots who flew 10 or more young eagles in 2003.
Included in that list were: Sam Archer, Lee Dines, Karen Fenton, Dwight Irby, Wayne Riggs, Leon Smith and Jim Ylvisaker.
Good job! And thanks to the rest of you who also flew young eagles last year.

I have attached a web site regarding a pilot who is on a great adventure in his T-craft. On the first leg of his adventure, his engine accessory drive let loose over Kelso and he made a “precautionary” landing. A bolt head had snapped on the cam and mag drive gear, then the bolt head jammed into the gears and finished off one of the mags. Pieces went through out the engine so it was finished. He got e rebuild out of Troutdale and got back on the road a few days later.

Plane Thoughts

The current airport manager, Bob Olson, and the maintenance man, Don, are retiring at the end of March.

The City of Kelso will hold a public meeting on March 8, 7pm @ the Kelso Train Depot to discuss how to handle the future maintenance of the airport. Public input and especially airport user input is desired. That’s us!

Jerry Sorrell will bring the description of work for the maintenance program.

An option that appears to have favor with the City is contracting the work out. More specifically, the FBO has submitted a proposal.

We will put this on the agenda for discussion to see if the Chapter wants to take a position for the record at the pubic meeting.

On The Flight Line ---
anyAWOS Provides Access to Current Weather Reports From Anywhere
A new service allows anyone to access any publicly available Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) or Automated Tower Information System (ATIS) via a toll-free number. It’s called anyAWOS, from Mackinac Software, LLC. Dial 877/any-AWOS (877/269-2967), enter any three-character airport identifier, choose from the possible airports provided, and you’ll be connected to that airport’s AWOS or ATIS number. The service allows users to easily access current weather conditions nationwide, and in the case of ATIS, current airport information such as snow removal operations notices or runway closures. (Because not all AWOS/ASOS locations report METARs, current on-airport weather may only be available from the AWOS.) For more information visit www.anyAWOS.com, or e-mail info@anyAWOS.com.

Minutes/Notes From Last Meeting

EAA CHAPTER 1111 MINUTES FEB 5, 2004

At the close of the executive meeting, we went to Charlie Rosenzweig’s place to look at the Toyota engine test stand and RV-6 A that Charlie has been working on. The engine test stand allows him to sort out and establish ignition and fuel parameters and test the gear box reduction unit.

Our meeting also included the following business activities.
Dues are due @ $24 per year. Dues help to cover the cost of annual liability insurance required by EAA, and operational expenses for mailing and web site. Calendars are still available, so see Al Drewry.

Jim Ylvisaker told us that Bob Jones donated various aviation books and two Loran Units. Jim has sold one unit with the $50 going to the chapter account. The other Loran is available. See Jim for details. Sale proceeds will also go to the chapter account. The chapter approved a motion to give Jim the authority to sell the Loran.

Mark Edwards reported on a flight safety seminar coming up at Hood River Community College. Mark will e mail details to Eric for E-mailing.

In recognition of leadership roles, Jerry Sorrell handed out certificates of appreciation and lapel pins to Sam and Sandy Archer, Jim Ylvisaker, Mark Edwards, Eric Hoppe, Jay Tabor, and Al Drewry. Jay was not present, so Jerry will meet with him later.

The March 4th EAA meeting will be at the FBO. We will have a program on electronic instrumentation, with by and outside guest or by Eric Hoppe

We appreciated the open house, food and beverages that Charlie and Sandy provided. This was a great project tour and meeting place. The test run of the Toyota engine was also educational, to see the results of Charlie’s study in automotive engine application for aircraft.

Hello,
I live in Svensen, Or. near Astoria at Karpen field
. We don't have an EAA chapter down hear, you guys are the closest. I am building a Bearhawk from plans, it is steel tube and fabric fuselage and has all aluminum wings. I am looking for some used tools. I need many clecos. about 300 to 500 silver (3/32), 50 Black (5/32), and about 10 or so brass (3/16), side grip clecos. I also am looking for other tools; a rivet cutter, dimpling dies, a 3X rivet gun, rivet sqeezer, bucking bars, etc. I am also looking for someone within a reasonable distance from where I live who has an 8ft. bending brake.
I have most of my wing ribs completed and have all my spar webs bent into "C" channel. I have acquired a few clecos from my neighbor who has built a Starduster too, but need many more. I already have many other tools useful in building a homebuilt; drill press, tig welder, band saw, bench sander, etc. and I built a 4ft. X 18ft. construction table that will be very useful to another builder when I am finished with it.
I am hoping that a EAA chapter will start down here so that I can get together with some local builders, buy you guys aren't that far away.
thanks much,
Lloyd Biddlecome

Flight Funnies

A DC-10 had come in a little hot and thus had an exceedingly long roll out after touching down. San Jose Tower noted: "American 751, make a hard right turn at the end of the runway, if you are able... If not able, take the Guadeloupe exit off Highway 101, make a right at the lights and return to the airport."

Unknown aircraft waiting in a very long takeoff queue: "I'm f...ing bored!"

Ground Traffic Control: "Last aircraft transmitting, identify yourself immediately!"

Unknown aircraft: "I said I was f...ing bored, not f...ing stupid!"
