Chehalis Centralia Chapter 609 Activities
On August 14, I flew to Chehalis to see if
the Young Eagles Flight Team needed any extra planes. Plenty of
aircraft were available but I did fly two kids who really enjoyed
the adventure. They each took the controls, flew to and
spotted their homes from the air.
The event was well organized. Chehalis lends
itself to large events due to the huge parking area available for
the drive ins.
A most interesting enticement to the Young
Eagles pilots was the 200 gallons of av-gas donated by BP. Next
year we need to ask about this possibility. The Kelso airport has
BP gas on the field.

The AWOS relocation study is about wrapped
up. Then city is pursuing relocation of the AWOS so additional
hangars can be built to the south of the existing. The AWOS has
to be relocated, as any buildings closer to the AWOS may affect
radio transmission range and could act as a wind break which
might give misleading wind information to the pilots.
The CAP is looking to expand their office
space in the city owned building on the NW corner of the airport.

Chehalis EAA Chapter 609 Plans an October
Poker Run
How long has it been since we have had a fly
out event? Chapter 609 invites us to join them. More at the
meeting.
Nominating Committee Report Due
The nominating committee will have some
major news announcements to make at the September meeting. You
must hear it in person on September 2nd to
believe it.
October Annual Meeting
How can it be so soon for the annual meeting
and the election of officers for 2005? Where will we meet in
October? Hear more at the September 2nd meeting.
About 2 years ago, a friend of mine, Tony Bequette,
bought a project called a Cherokee sailplane. This is an all wood
project, with a span of over 40 feet. The basic structure has
been built, except for the left wing.
This project has been handed around for a
number of years, so there is some damage due to handling.
It appears the project has been kept out of
the weather, looking at the condition of the wood.
Old EAA magazines have covered this
sailplane design, and it has been flown successfully with add-on
engine packages to self launch.
The project is FREE to whoever
wants to tackle it. There are plans and a builders
log. Currently, most of the structure is stored in my hangar B-4
at Kelso if anyone wants to take a look. Call me at 360-263-1532.
This is a plans built experimental. A
person taking on this project must be knowledgeable enough about
woodwork and materials to be self sufficient.
Here is some web info:
Comment:
The Cherokee II was introduced in 1956 specifically for amateur
construction from plans. The entire airframe is covered in
fabric. Upper surface spoilers control the glidepath, and the
landing gear is fixed. Many examples vary in detail. The design
was further developed by several builders including the Cherokee
RM by Terry Miller and John Ree with a 13.4 m. / 44 ft. span wing
with NACA 64(3)-618 airfoil which increased L/D max. to about 28,
and the 15 m. Leonard Annebula which has Prue type trailling edge
airbrakes and a claimed L/D max. of 31. A Cherokee RM belongs to
the National Soaring Museum.
For more about this, just type in
"Cherokee sailplane" on the Google search engine and
quite a bit comes up.

Fly-in: all final transactions have not yet been made. We
are not sure of the end results. We feel we really should
pay some people who said they would personally absorb expenses.
The burger burn at the following meeting easily made more money
than the fly-in.
Mark says he would like to start donating more for his use of the
chapter hangar.
We need to
put together a nominating committee for next year's officers.
Some names were mentioned, the nominating committee will
formalize the suggestions. Thoughts of a VP mentoring
position with the intention of moving into the Presidency were
discussed to make the role more appealing. All were in
agreement to put JimY is on the nominating committee. Looking
to have a smooth transition to new leadership.
JimY
suggested using the CAP building as an interim clubhouse. People
involved, times, and objections have changed recently. We
should be able to work out a deal w/ CAP. It will be looked
into.
Chapter Meeting
4
officers, 18 members and guests present.
Secretary
reviewed the treasurer's report from the board meeting. Discussion
about the profit margin between the fly-in and the burger burn.
Meeting
next month will be in the FBO. Should we try to have a
meeting in another building?
Our guest
speaker: George Bickford. An old Navy pilot with an incredible
amount of experience in many types of aircraft. He gave
a very engaging talk about hsi experiences and took questions.
We all
then stuffed ourselves with pie and ice cream. Some of us
learned that "apple pie without the cheese is like a hug
without the squeeze!"
There were
quite a few planes at the meeting. Two RV's, two Murphy's,
Mark's Wag, Leo's Velocity. Some people even gave rides.
Keith Loose is Guest Speaker for
September Meeting
Keith will be meeting with us at our
September 2nd meeting. He is the primary investor in
the Kelso Flight Center and has airport manager responsibilities
under contact with the City of Kelso.
Keith will also share how he can offer
assistance to experimental builders and certified aircraft
owners.
Hi Fellow EAA Members ...
My name is Tom Sampson (EAA Member # 0647053
since Dec 2000), and I live in Portland (Tigard), Oregon.
I am looking for a particular experimental
project ... a Pete Bowers' Fly Baby.
I will consider projects in any stage of
completion, but would prefer one with wings and empennage
completed.
Would you be willing to reply via email to
me if you have any knowledge of a Fly Baby project in your
Chapter? ... or would you be willing to make an announcement at
your next Chapter meeting or in your Newsletter?
Thanks for any assistance that you can
offer.
Here are my contact details ...
Regards,
Tom Sampson

Jerry Sorrell has donated a 110-120
volt 1 horsepower air compressor, with regulator, to the
chapter. It will be placed in the EAA hangar. It has a 25 foot
hose but no fittings on the end. Who has some quick connectors
and a tire inflator? This compressor is good for a standard spray
gun, rivet gun, air drill, etc. It has pushed enough air to paint
at least 20 cars and assemble one RV-4 so it has proven its
worth. The compressor is not suitable to run air sanders or long
term use of grinders or cut off tools. That takes about 5
horsepower to do a decent job. We hope the circuit breakers are
high enough amps at the hangar. This compressor needs a heavy
duty extension cord if it is to be any distance from the outlet.
