Navy Test Pilot, Guest Speaker For The Next Meeting, 7 P.M., March 3rd At The FBO

Our Guest speaker will be "Skip" Leuschner. Skip soloed with the Navy in 1959 and flew as a test pilot for a few years, a carrier pilot flying Vietnam combat missions, and was an active pilot until 1975 when he went on to nuclear propulsion school. He was Captain of the USS Enterprise carrier group for three years and finished his service in Washington DC, retiring in 1991.

Mr. Leuschner flew everything in the Navy's inventory from 1959 up to the FA 18, including props, jet, and rotary winged aircraft.

Skip will talk about the test pilot's approach to flying a new type of aircraft.

Plane Thoughts

This is a neat web site from the EAA Hotline that offers a builders construction log.  It will track work on various components or systems, and total  the  cost and time.  http://www.expercraft.com/

VISIT TO EVERGREEN AVIATION MUSEUM

By: Jerry Sorrell

On Friday evening, February 18th, I attended a special invitation buffet and tour of the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville OR.

The person who invited me was Marlo Treit, who has been involved in aviation and exotic cars for many years. He is a long time friend of Jim McClellan’s and Marlo knew that I would also enjoy the tour.

It had been a few years since I had been to the museum. What a difference! The collections have expanded to fill the inside floor space capacity. The centerpiece is an experimental aircraft, the Hughes “Spruce Goose”. Under it wing is the SR-71 Blackbird.

Since this was an after hours private showing, the upper deck of the plane was made accessible for eight people at a time. I did not pass up the opportunity to sit in the pilot’s seat where Howard Hughes took the ship off for the once-only flight. I was careful not to flip on the master switch and start the engines.

Regarding the rest of the museum, the tour guide said that if a person was to read every display board, watch every video, and follow the tour guide lectures, it takes about two days to take it all in.  It is overwhelming. If you have not been to this museum or it has been a year or two, it is time to plan that trip now!  This could be a good fly out destination.

More is in the works. An IMAX theater is under construction and another matching building is being planned to display all the rest of the airplanes now in waiting at other locations!

The Pilot’s Seat. This is the only control column. Note the eight throttles.

Howard Hughes at the controls. Notice how the throttle quadrant was later revised.

Minutes of February's Meeting

E.A.A. Chapter # 1111 Monthly Meeting Agenda
February 3, 2005

E-BOARD MEETING:

Attending: Charlie Rosenzweig, Paul Brown, Fernando Cuglievan, and Jerry Sorrell. Absent: Bob Taylor, Steve Stienhoff

Old Business:

1) Web hosting – Eric

Eric reported that he had been coordinating with Bob Taylor on the transition to the new web site. Bob’s work load has kept him from the meeting tonight. The new web page is on line now and we have plenty of space for photos.

2) Transition of officer - forms and signatures. Fernando has a signature to get from Steve and Bob. They are the new officers that must show on the signature cards for the Credit Union.

3) Audit of books - Mike Lewis. Mike provided a concise audit and has taken the information and put it on the computer. Mike reported the books looked good as far as could be ascertained with the information given to Mike. The receipt book had not been given to Mike, so he had not looked at this. Charlie would, like additional accounting in the future.  This has to be policy / guidelines established by the E board so the Treasurer knows what information to track or provide. Jerry will provide Fernando with some Treasurer guidelines. Mike Lewis offered to help by providing a Quick Book package and his accountant will set up the program for us.

4) Projector: Eric had details in the projector, to be presented to the membership later.  Charlie said that Eric should not have to front the funds for this if we get two with the intent of raffling one to pay for both. Mark Edwards suggested we just outright buy a projector. Fernando suggested we buy one. Paul agreed

5) EAA membership list: Charlie would like to see a membership drive person. We can let a list of pilots off the FAA web site. Eric used the EAA list in the past to develop an invitation mailer for the chapter.

New Business:

1) EAA Chapter 517. Members from a number of chapters have joined together to make one purchase of 10 tickets thus saving $5.00 per ticket. The normal ticket price is $25.00, but ten tickets per order are only $200.00.  www.eaa517.org  (We did not take any action on this. I think it was for a Kitfox)

MAIN MEETING:

Welcome to visitors: Buzz Benham has rejoined us, after much time on home construction

Program – Paul Brown. Paul said our guest speaker ( Skip Leuschner)  has the flu. He encouraged us to take him for a flight. Skip has many hours in military aircraft, but was not familiar with the EAA program.

 Old Business:

1) Digital Projector Project - Eric Hoppe

Eric made the presentation. Refer to the Feb newsletter for details. The group had much discussion on the use and purpose, both for chapter use and home use. The discussion covers a variety of options such as purchase 1 and raffle before purchasing another, buying one outright with no raffle, go with the raffle plan presented by Eric, etc.  Mike Lewis said the building fund should not be used to by a projector, as that is a designated fund. We then discussed the purpose of the checking account savings account and CD. Dwight Irby asked what the future plan was for the money. More specifically, were the funds going to used as a down payment, partnership, etc?

There is a building fund formula that clarifies in old minutes the distribution of dues between checking and building fund.

For Feb 2005: Finances posted for the record:

Checking $217.18

(Savings) $2,655.73  ( Later to be determined as also building funds)

Building (CD) $14,082.32

There was a motion and second to have funds put into an interest bearing account, to include the building fund. (This motion was intended to address the misunderstanding of the separate savings and CD accounts)  Charlie wanted to be sure we were not taking any action that would violate the bylaws.

We discussed amending the motion and Charlie asked that we table it. Jim Ylivsaker said any action the board would take on the purchase of a projector would be contingent on the classification of available funds. Eric discussed how the raffle would work and presented an example on the whiteboard.

We left this topic for the board to sort out. They will have an interim workshop to clarify the designated funds and purpose.

Tool Loan Program:

Jerry had a sign up sheet for tools we may have available and tools we may need. Discussion on the access to the list. Jerry will keep this list in-house for the EAA 1111 membership and  not on the web.

Web Site Update:

Eric covered the updated web site  and the ability to offer more photo space.

New Business:

Young Eagles :

Young Eagles representatives for 2005 are Terry Creamer and Harry Blair.

Tech Counselors:

Tech Counselors for 2005 are Jay Tabor and Jerry Sorrell

Membership Committee

We really need a person for this (Mark Edwards?)

Fly Out Committee

We have done this before, but the more elaborate fly outs do not seem to work well. The more impromptu ones do. Jim Ylvisaker agreed to chair this.

Building Committee:

Al Drewry offered to be the chair. The committee includes Dwight Irby, Jim Ylvisaker, and Jerry Sorrell. Dwight wanted to know if the group was ready to make a commitment on the next batch of hangars that are supposed to go up on the north apron. The committee is to bring a hangar report next month. We had general discussion on EAA hangars elsewhere and how the Northwest antique airplane club has fundraisers. Charlie said we need to be a growing group. Our size of membership has stagnated.

Jerry reported on upcoming aviation activities in February

Feb 16. Winter flying seminar at the FBO

Feb 23. AOPA safety program on weather. See www.asg.org

Feb 26-27 Washington Air Fair at Puyallup fairgrounds

Meeting adjourned around 8 p.m.
