PRES SEZ SEPT 2005

I write this month's Pres Sez after reviewing our past months activities; and it is hard seeing all the things Jim Ylvisaker was involved in, and how much he will be missed.  But go on we must - Jim would want that.  We have lots to talk about and do.  We are moving our monthly meeting time from next Thursday to Saturday Sept 10th at 1:00pm, where we will hold our picnic.  We will mostly just enjoy some grilled burgers and hotdogs and hold a short business meeting.  I am sure we will reminisce about all the great things about Jim's life - it will be good!

The Executive Board will be Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. on Sept 8th at the FBO to get an update on our Building Committee's progress.  I will talk briefly about the meeting I attended with the Cascade Warbirds and MOMS planning for next years event.

Please come on Saturday the 10th.  Good food, good people and probably some flying to be had.  Looking forward to see you all there!!

MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 4, 2005 EXECUTIVE BOARD AND CHAPTER MEETING

EXECUTIVE MEETING AT 6 PM AT KELSO FBO

Attended by executive board and building committee.

Jim Ylvisaker has issued a draft proposal for the combined lease agreement of A-6 and A-7 to the city. There will be more discussion about this at the airport board meeting next week.

Here is the excerpt from the airport board meeting. August 11th.

EAA CHAPTER 1111 CLUBHOUSE ACQUISITION UPDATE
August 11, 2005

The Airport Advisory Board took action today regarding the EAA Chapters
proposal for a long term lease of Unit A7 (Windsock Café) and Hangar A6 as a
Clubhouse facility.  The Chapter was represented by Jerry Sorrell and Jim
Ylvisaker

Our proposal had been distributed to Board members and David Sypher, City of
Kelso Director of Public Works,  prior to the meeting. We had proposed
bundling the two facilities together into one long term lease arrangement at
$3600. per year. Mr. Sypher countered with a recommendation that the units
be leased separately  to Chapter 1111 on a month to month basis for the going
hangar rental rate and with consideration being given on a case by  case
basis for rent reduction to offset improvements that the City  would view as
increasing the value of the property.

What happened:

The  Board entered a motion  to the effect of implementing Mr. Sypher¹s
recommendations with details to be worked out between Mr. Sypher and EAA
Chapter representatives. In discussion, we asked for clarification regarding
how Mr. Sypher was arriving at the cost value of Unit A7, since it is not a
hangar.  He responded that it was on the assumption that the square footage
of the two is about equal. We indicated that it may in fact be different but
that we would measure it up and report back.  We also stated that the Club
feels it is important to have a long term lease to protect our investment in
capital improvements planned for Unit A7.  The Board was sympathetic to that
and adjusted the motion to include its approval of a 15 year lease for Unit
A7.  A6 would be on month to month basis.

Jerry and Jim measured the outside dimensions of A7 (we didn’t have access
to the inside) and found the total first floor space to be 800 square feet.
A hangars are 1300 square feet.  The question of how to value the upper
floor remains.

(Return to the minutes)

Jerry is to review the by-laws about the change in officers should a vacancy need to be filled.

We need a current status of all income on hangars 44 and 45. No changes are proposed, but a clarification.

Picnic will be Saturday September 10th.  The building committee and exec board will meet on Sept 8th.

Jim McClellan wishes to use hangar A-6 for 2-3 months while he is rebuilding his runway in La Center.

Charlie said we should develop a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding the use of hanger A-6. Jerry said there are EAA hangar use guidelines already developed by EAA HQ. Jerry has a copy.

Our Chapter is invited to the Pierce County EAA Chapter 326 burger burn on Tuesday August 9th.

Jim Ylivsaker discussed that next year, if we help with the Warbird fly in, we should do better advertising for the Young Eagles event. Jim asked Terry Cramer to be involved.

For the upcoming picnic, Charlie thought that we should have planes available to give rides to the EAA members. We did this last year and it was a positive thing.

CHAPTER MEETING AT 7 pm.

MSC that Jim McClellan donate $203.11 per month for hangar A-6 for three months. We were not certain who supplies locks. Jim will bring his own.

Treasurer’s report given.

We discussed that Fernando Cuglievan has not had opportunity to attend meetings or do all the treasurer’s duties due to his work load.

MSC that we appoint al Drewry as Treasurer upon receipt of Fernando’s resignation and that there are no conflicts with the by-laws in the process.  We all appreciated Al’s willingness to help out.

SEPTEMBER 10TH PICNIC

Jim Y was to bring a barbeque set.

Jeryr S the same.

Bev L.  Tash containers

Al D. condiments

Charlie, Buns an burgers

Gary T. Beverage

Bev. Pies and deviled eggs

Jim Y potato salad

New business:

Charlie discussed how he has laid up a mold to make the cowl for his RV-6 ship. The reason for the lay up is that he has an automotive conversion, so the Lycoming cowl is does not apply.  He may bring this to the picnic for show and tell. The engine has been ground run for about 20 hours.

Mark Edwards gave a great report on the trip to Oshkosh and back with Lee Dines. These minutes can not begin to describe the adventure.

Likewise, Dwight Irby flew his Duke to Oshkosh and had a great time. Everybody must do Oshkosh at least once.

NEXT CHAPTER MEETING IS THE PICNIC ON SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH AT 1 PM.  WE WILL NOT MEET AS A CHAPTER ON THE FIRST THURSDAY.

HOWEVER, WE DID NOTE THAT THE EXECUTIVE BOARD AND BUILDING COMMITTEE WILL MEET ON THURSDAY SEPT 8TH.

ARTICLE ON JIM YLVISAKER  FROM THE DAILY NEWS LONGVIEW WA,  FRIDAY AUGUST 26, 2005

A Longview man died Wednesday afternoon when his small plane crashed as he flew home from Idaho.

Jim Ylvisaker, former president of a local aviation club and husband to retired county commissioner Joan LeMieux, was 72.

Ylvisaker's plane crashed while trying to land in Eastern Oregon, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office. From the preliminary investigation, it appears that his single engine aircraft may have experienced mechanical problems.

Ylvisaker moved to the area 13 years ago, after he retired from a career as a teacher and administrator in Oregon schools.

He quickly became involved in a number of service groups, as he continued to pursue his love of the outdoors and interest in aviation, LeMieux said of her husband, whom she married in 1994.

"A lot of people recognized him by his little white mustache, as he went about his routine," said LeMieux, 72.

Ylvisaker exercised most days at the YMCA, then would head to Starbucks for coffee and conversation, LeMieux said. He attended book clubs, Kiwanis meetings and gatherings of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

It was in his throaty Great Lakes biplane, flying above Longview and Kelso, that Ylvisaker may have received most of his notice.

"It was bright red, and you always knew it was him," LeMieux said.

"He was an active, avid pilot," and a pillar of the amateur flying community said Charlie Rosenzweig, president of the local Experimental Aircraft Association and chief criminal deputy of the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office.

Until he was 61 years old, Ylvisaker had never piloted a plane.

"We got married, and he said, 'You know, I've always wanted to fly,' " LeMieux said. "I said, 'What are you waiting for?' "

Ylvisaker was born in Minnesota, moving to Oregon when he was still in grade school, LeMieux said. Both his parents died while he was in his early teens, and Ylvisaker grew to adulthood under the care of his stepmother.

After high school, Ylvisaker joined the U.S. Army, where he served in post-World War II Germany, playing trumpet in a military band.

"Music was always a very big part of his life -- both classical and jazz," LeMieux said.

After leaving the service, Ylvisaker earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Oregon, before embarking on his career in education.

It was as the widowed father of two adult sons that Ylvisaker met LeMieux, also a widow.

Theirs was an active life together, LeMieux said. They traveled to Russia and to Ylvisaker's ancestral homeland, Norway.

Beyond his many hobbies -- loves of maps, the theater, jazz, photography, the great outdoors and boats -- Ylvisaker was always engaged in social issues, LeMieux said.

He started a local education enrichment program called Saturday Academy, which died when the funding ran out, and was a long-time member of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

"He was a very active, full-flavored man," LeMieux said. "He enjoyed so many things in life."

Ylvisaker's fixed-wing, single-engine Maule plane crashed about eight miles northeast of Monument, Ore., according to a press release from the Grant County Sheriff's Office. He had refueled in Ontario, Ore., after saying good-bye to an Idaho friend. During his pit stop, he called home to talk to LeMieux.

A crashed plane was reported a few hours later by the Oregon Department of Forestry.

An investigation into the crash will be conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board, according to a Grant County Sheriff's Office press release.

Service

A celebration of life service will be held for Jim Ylvisaker at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the McClelland Arts Center, 951 Delaware.

Webmaster Note: Jim was a great friend, dedicated community supporter, and enthusiastic booster of EAA1111. He and the sight of his red Grate Lakes soaring over the Kelso-Longview Area will be sorely missed.
