NEXT CHAPTER MEETING Ground Hog's Day (Thursday)

7:00P.M., February 2nd, 2006 AT THE KELSO AIRPORT FBO

Prez Sez

Lots of progress has been made on many important issues for our chapter in the past 30 days.  We have a great program this meeting, and we will hopefully hear some progress from builder reports.   The executive board has been very busy working on several issues such insurance issues, budgets, and of course developing our plan for the ever-popular renovation of the old "cafe" in to our clubhouse.

COME and be a part of what is happening with EAA 1111.

Charlie Rosenzweig Chapter President.

Thursday's Presentation is on powered parachutes!

This Thursday, Art Smith and Doug Maas from EAA Chapter 127 at Brush Prairie Airport (that's right!) will be sharing the exhilaration and technology involved in the rapidly growing sport of powered parachuting. From pasture to mountaintop, I think you'll find their experiences enjoyable. In the meantime, check'em out at: http://poweredparachuters.com/

EAA CHAPTER 1111 CHAPTER MEETING

JANUARY 5, 2006

Meeting held at Kelso Flight Service FBO, Thursday, January 5, @ 7 p.m.

Guests and prospective members: Mike Mayer and Todd Belden

New Business:

Charlie Rosenzweig  noted that the dues were now $48 per month and “dues are due”. The dues increase was discussed last month and a show of hands showed majority support.  Even with the dues increase, we will not make budget unless there are fund raisers or increases elsewhere. A new membership drive is critical.

Old Business

Charlie gave an update on the exec meeting we had the night before. Charlie said it is important that the general business of the executive board be done at a time that does not overlap into the Chapter meeting. Our exec meeting was about 2 hours long. We discussed insurance, utilities expense, locks, cabinets, work day for A-7 etc.

Charlie said we must have more time for the fun part of Chapter meeting and less on business details. The executive board meetings will be held the day before the Chapter meeting and for now will be at Dwight Irby’s place on Willow Grove. Any member may attend.

Treasurer Report

Checking $2,620.18 and Savings $13,261.74

Audit of 2005 financial records

Mike Lewis will accomplish this with the help of his book keeper, Julie.

EAA Chapter Status Report and A-7 Agreement

Jerry Sorrell reported that the annual EAA status report and insurance payment has been made. Our previous insurance payment was $300 but is now $848 due to our new leases for A-6 and A-7, which we did not have for the entire year 2005.

Jim Ylvisaker Young Eagles Memorial Fund

Additional memorial funds are still coming in. It is now nearly $1,000. Dwight discussed the Kiwanis fund and it may be better that we not try to blend these. The Kiwanis memorial funds may be better used in a program related to Kiwanis. We have sufficient to provide scholarship funds towards a young eagle age student seeking aviation as a career. At this time we are in the idea stage and no funds are committed.

Jim Ylvisaker Books Donated to our Library

Jerry again reported that we have dozens of aviation related books donated by Joan Le Mieux for our EAA library. These can be placed in our new clubhouse.

Vne Red Line Airspeed Presentation

Jim McClellan gave a presentation, taking information from Vans aircraft newsletter, on how it is very possible to exceed the true airspeed by mistaking that the indicated airspeed as the safe limit. When it comes to flutter, it is the air molecule’s speed over the wing that count and not the pressure indicated by the molecules against the airspeed instrument bellows. The chance of exceeding the tested flutter speed is more apt happen, the higher the altitude.  Planes with turbo’s installed are at the most risk due to the higher altitude capability. Jim also told of his tentative plans to fly to Baja with some other “RVs’” in March. This is a good fly out.

Future Programs

Steve Steinhoff, VP, is the lead person on arranging the monthly programs.   Thank you Steve! Charlie challenged every member to present some type of program at least once. This would take care of us for years! Steve is ready to schedule you now, so we may make an advanced posting of the programs. For Feb 2, 2006, Bob Taylor has invited a powered parachute group from Brush Prairie to visit us. ~ See http://poweredparachuters.com/   In the months to come, we will hear from a designer of all new aircraft that will fit either the Experiential or Light Sport Aircraft categories. And…. it is being built near-by.  Don’t miss these upcoming programs!

Summer Warbird Fly In August 2006

Dwight said this will with the overall event being prepared by Elizabeth Johnston of MOMS (Mothers Of Military Support). The event is tentatively Aug 18-19-20. Our chapter’s participation has been offered, but again, there will be insurance issues so we must be on board with the EAA policy and exclusions of we are involved.

2006 Budget

The E board continues to work on the budget. As it is, we are slightly in the red, with all the anticipated expenses of insurance, utilities, lease payments, etc. The set aside reserves for the A-7 clubhouse WILL NOT be used for paying ordinary operations cost. The dues have been raised to help cover these operations costs and we have to look at other ways of raising the funds to cover the bases. Ideas include auctions, raffles, fly-in breakfast or lunch, etc.

Dues Paid for 2006

The following are current on dues paid for 2006:  Sam and Sandy Archer, Mark Edwards, Dwight Irby, Mike and Bev Lewis, Phil Phillips, Mike Proshold, Charlie Rosenzweig, Warren Snook, Jerry Sorrell, Steve Stienhoff, Gary Trenner, Richards Woods, Jim McClellan. Your membership is important to the success of the chapter.

A-7 Clubhouse Tour

After the business and member presentation, we went to the A-7 clubhouse and had our first social stand up meeting with coffee, juice, cookies, and veggie tray.   A clean-up work day is planned before the next meeting. Anyone wanting the tour in advance, please contact Jerry or Dwight. Additional keys will be made for the building committee and the chapter has to work out how all paid up members can have access, and still keep good security. Steve Stienhoff and Dwight will work on that idea.

Rod Machado Humor

Rod Machado is a well know aviation pilot, instructor, writer, and comedian. His books include the use of humor as a training tool. Here is what an instructor taught the student about the Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI).

Instructor to the Student:

When all the lights are white, you are above glide path.

When the lights are split between red and white, you are on the glide path.

When all the lights are red, you are below glide path.

When all the lights are green, you are far below glide path, because the lights are now filtering through the grass.
