Monthly Meeting Agenda
March 1st, 2007
Feast: Only $3.00 for a dog, chips, and pop or coffee! Come swap flying lie...uh....tails with us and enjoy the company in our new clubhouse.
Program: Starting at 7:00, our guest speaker will be RV-9A builder Duane Wilson. Duane only recently learned to fly and then discovered he could "roll his own". Duane will treat us to his project's story followed by a tour of his glass panel and RV-9A, hangared in row "B" at Kelso.
This is an exciting time for Duane, as his final inspection is scheduled next week with first flight to follow within two weeks. Congratulations Duane!
Dues for 2007 are due:
The annual dues for our chapter are $48.00 per year. This applies towards our insurance, EAA national dues, utilities and hangar rent to the city.
Old Business
Somewhere we have a CD or DVD or ?? of a promotional video that
Jim Ylvisaker and Bob Taylor worked on. This was going to be on
the local cable TV. We spent $200 or $300 on a hard drive to do
this. The hard drive is sitting in the library cabinet.
Either we agree to bring this back to life or have a funeral for
it. (Webmaster Comment: It was a terrific start and a lot of fun
but time-consuming to produce. I'd like to see us finish the
project ~ Bob Taylor)
Ylivasker memorial for young eagles. We have talked about
scholarship. Denny Wise is also doing a helper thing with a high
school student. Could be that a student who completes his FAA
written ground for private pilot be eligible for a scholarship. I
recommend that Harry and Terry bring a recommendation on this. (
Maybe we already decided this??)
TECH REPORTS BY JERRY SORRELL
LOW COMPRESSION MAY BE OK ON CONTINENTALS
If you or you mechanic are performing a differential compression
check on a Continental engine and come up with a reading
something in the low 60's or even 50's, that is not reason enough
to pull the cylinder, says Teledyne Continental Motors. There are
some possible for low compression that does not warrant cylinder
head work. For further details, contact you trusty mechanic or
the engine manufacturer.
WORKING ON CERTIFIED AIRCRAFT OR CERTIFIED PARTS ON YOUR
EXPERIMENTAL
I have written and talked before about FAA Part 43 which allows
aircraft owners to perform certain maintenance and repair work on
certified aircraft. I will not go into the details here, but to
note that whatever is done per FAA part 43, this must be per the
factory manuals or service bulletins. For example, you can clean
and repack wheel bearings, but this must be done per the service
manual and with the grease specified.
Suppose your spark plugs are to be torque to 30-35 foot pounds,
per the engine manufacture. Suppose you use your Craftsman or
Proto torque wrench you have used for years, but you overlooked
the fact that the engine manufacture said the torque wrench shall
have been recently bench certified ( last 60 days) to be accurate
within 5% of the torque value you need. Technically, your spark
plugs could be torqued within the value but not in accordance
with the manufacturer's tool specification.
If you have certified parts on your experimental (typically
engine and prop), the only work you can do by yourself on the
certified parts, is the work allowed under FAA Part 43. Better
have the A&P do anything else or work under the A&P's
direct supervision, and the A&P's signature needs to be in
the logs so the certified parts remain certified.
OUT OF SIGHT PRICES FOR CERTIFIED REPLACEMENT PARTS
I found this article in a recent aviation publication. An owner
of a Beech Musketeer was told at the annual, the throttle cable
was found to be worn out and needed replacement. Beech did not
stock the part and the supplier did not have any. However, the
supplier was "willing" to make a replacement cable for
$5000.00. That's right, Five Thousand Dollars for a throttle
cable. The owner was able to get another similar in-stock cable
to work under a field approval for.... $1,200.00 and he was
happy. Doesn't this tell us why experimentals are so popular?

year.
Al Drewry reminds all members that 2007dues are now payable.
Jerry reports to the membership on recent fly-outs first to
Hillsboro where he found Hillsboro Aviation is offering an
introductory helicopter flight for $69. He also reports on a
second flight to the Tillamook Air Museum.
Dwight informs the chapter of the need for Thank you letters are
needed for several local businesses that have donated items for
the club house remodel. Terry will prepare letters.
Program:
Jim & Mary Ann McClelland shared a slide show of their recent
RV4 trip to Mexico, the scenery was spectacular and their
descriptions of the people and places they visited were great.
Executive Board Chapter Planning Meeting:
A 2007 chapter planning meeting was held on January 18th 2007,
the meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm.
Board members present were: Dwight Irby, Bill Piper, Jerry
Sorrell, Al Drewry, Gary Trenner and Terry Creamer.
Young Eagles:
The question was raised as to how we should distribute the money
donated to the Ylvisaker scholarship funds?
Jerry Sorrell reports that additional funds are forthcoming from
the sale of some items donated by Jims family. The total is
now over $1,200.
The committee has asked the Young Eagle chairman Harry Blair and
Terry Creamer to bring scholarship suggestions for members to
discuss at the February Chapter Meeting.
Monthly Programs:
The responsibility for securing monthly programs for the Chapter
meetings has historically been assigned to the chapter Vice
President, so Gary Trenner will take over this task beginning
with the March meeting.
Snacks:
The snacks for our monthly meetings for some time now has been
generously provided by Bob Taylor, we would like to thank Bob for
his kindness and at this time fire him from this position. Thanks
Bob. For the term of this leadership group the exec board will
share the responsibility for monthly snacks.
The board discussed having chili & hot dogs as snacks for the
February meeting, we will be asking for $3 building fund
donation. (Bring your appetite and 3 bucks)
Dues and Membership Drive:
Terry Creamer will contact Mark Edwards and Eric Hoppe and ask
for an update at the February chapter meeting.
Fund Raisers:
With the higher monthly operating costs of our club house and
adjoining hangar the executive board feels that we should propose
some fund raising opportunities to the chapter.
A fly In was discussed to serve as a Grand Opening for our new
facilities and as a breakfast and possibly lunch to help raise
funds. A June date was discussed, we will need to check the dates
of other local fly Ins.
A member volunteer is needed as a food boss. Jerry Sorrell will
ask for a volunteer.
A Young Eagles fly day can also act as a small fund raiser. We
could sell low prep style food coffee, donuts, candy, pop, etc to
families of the Young Eagles while they wait.
Other fund raising ideas that were discussed were:
A Crab feed possibly in October.
Spaghetti feed.
2006 Audit:
Jerry Sorrell will be responsible for securing an auditor.
2007 Budget:
Jerry Sorrell has prepared a budget estimate we will post on the
web.
Voting status:
As we have added a new board member in the form of a Facilities
Manager, it has been suggested that we open for discussion the
possibility of making the Facilities manager a voting member of
the Executive board.
Hangers 44 and 45 maintenance and repairs:
The recent snow has shown a weakness in the door supports for
hangars 44 and 45 a temporary repair will be made, additional
repairs will be needed as time and weather allows.
A-7 Remodel:
Work continues slow but steady on the remodel of A7. The
downstairs is nearing completion with just restroom, trim and a
little cabinet and appliance work left.
The upstairs is starting to look better with the floor structural
repairs complete and much of the wall framing in place.
The big task remaining is the fire wall installation required
between A7 and the adjoining hangars. Over 100 sheets of drywall
will need to be purchased, handled and hung. (We will need as
much help as possible to handle that many sheets; it will be a
great time to volunteer if you havent yet joined the work
crew).
Once again, our next chapter meeting is on Thursday, March 1st at 7:00p.m. at our Clubhouse at Kelso Hangar A7. The Chili Dog Feast Starts at 6:30!
