Minutes From Last Executive Meeting -

Attending: Dwight Irby, Gary Trenner Bill Pieper, Jerry Sorrell

Dwight asked Jerry to file the annual EAA update to EAA headquarters. A check for approx $900 will be needed from Al Drewry to cover the insurance and annual dues.

Be sure the following are added to the membership:
Leonard and Lillian Moen
Bill Burr
Charles Hughes
Stu Curtis (Honorary)

We should have posted an accounting of the amount that was collected for dinner last meeting and for the drawing.

Next meeting, January 3, Mark Edwards will present some of his aviation history working for Ken Brock gyrocopters and the activities at Fla-bob airport by Riverside CA.

Note to the members at the January meeting. The $48 dues are due.

Annual EAA awards and pins to be presented at the January meeting.

We have two EAA windbreakers to raffle, compliments of the Tabors.

Reminder that Feb. 3rd is the super bowl game to watch and also a reason to snack. Clubhouse opens at 1 pm.

Gary Trenner will contact William Todd Heath regarding February chapter meeting dinner.

Between Bob and Eric, the newsletter will need to be on line this weekend.

Dwight would like to see the entire chapter remodel photos brought to a meeting so that we could make a photo collage.

Recognition of guest last meeting Eric Sorenson.

The rent on hangars 44 and 45 will be raised by the city, as allowed every 5 years under our contract with the city. This will amount to about $15 total per month for both hangars.

Grand Opening / Open House set for May 2008. Exact Saturday not defined yet. Invite area chapters.

We noted that earlier in 2007, Eric and Mark prepared a number of addressed post cards for inviting area EAA members to our chapter meetings. These cards will be mailed the end of January. Suggest we turn this over to Al Drewry and he can check with the post office on the best rate and method to mail the cards.

Dwight requested that the exec meeting be held on Thursday at 7 pm, a week prior to the regular chapter meeting. It has been too difficult to focus on executive business an hour prior to the chapter meeting the same day.

For the construction of the clubhouse, we have received a number of donations. Jerry will send thank you cards to the following:
Woods Logging for the A-7 fluorescent lights
Renaud Electric for A-7 mercury vapor lights
Pets and Pawns for the shower and hardware
Joe Wheeler Collision Repair for the use of a fork lift.
J H Kelly for the use of a large lift.
All Star Buildings for insulation materials, metal sheeting and fasteners.
Columbia River Floor Coverings for carpet at cost
Cowlitz Fence for a new pedestrian access gate to the hangars.

We also discussed a Memorial Plaque in honor of Jim Ylvisaker. This would be placed on the cabinet holding all the books that were donate by his wife Joanne, in Jim’s memory.

Plan on a motorcycle “fly out” before May 2008. No more rain, please.

Minutes From Last Meeting -

EAA CHAPTER 1111 MEETING MINUTES
DECEMBER 6, 2007

We had Lasagna, bread, and green salad dinner prepared by Al Drewry, and dessert pie by Beverly Lewis. Turn out for the meeting was great and we filled up the tables.

Jim McClellan donated a cylinder and piston that reportedly came from a B-24 crash site in AZ. This could make a great lamp stand.

Financial Report by Al Drewry: Savings: $2,117.81 Checking: $2,028.81
Designated funds for Ylvisaker EAA Young Eagles Fund: $1,300.00 Loans to repay: $1,571.08

Business: The Exec board presented a recommendation on an additional $50 initiation fee as an offset for the cost of operating the clubhouse and the insurances. This was passed by a majority vote but some felt this added fee may be a deterrent to membership.

Dick Woods has submitted a written report of the audit findings and found the income expense to reconcile and all deposits and checks issued to be accounted for.

Gary Trenner invited our guest speaker, Leighton Maguels of North Plains, OR Leighton is a professional Lancair builder. He knows fiberglass, systems, both fuel and electrical and engines installations. Our thanks to Leighton coming form North Plains to speak to us!

What Can We Expect To See At The Next Meeting -

Spaghetti and salad and more... at 6:30

8mm hang gliding movies, learning to fly, and in-flight departure footage off a 1200' ridge in Hawaii.

Gyrocopters and EAA Chapter 1, Flabob, CA Airport Fly-In stories by Mark Edwards. Don’t miss this!!

Dues are due, don’t you know… $48 for the year.

Other Stuff -

EAA CHAPTER 1111
CLUBHOUSE A-7 TO DO LIST
To Do List as of December 25, 2007

Outside weather strip and caulk around the north lower window.

Finish one upper window metal trim and caulk (Bill Piper knows details).

Shelving and cabinets for upstairs Ylvisaker Memorial Library underway.

Paint molding downstairs at various locations as most of it is in primer now.

Install plastic panels in light fixtures upstairs.

Shower Room: Clean shower and finish trim work around shower and interior walls of shower room. Install curtain rod, curtain, and towel rack Put cabinet door back on and install paper towel dispenser.

Move stored furniture from hangar #44 to upstairs.

Need coat rack or coat tree downstairs.

Outside.
Paint the whole works next spring.
Possibly remove the other tree that seems to be dying
Complete overheard illuminated sign.
Conduit for overhead sign (Al Drewry)

Hangars 44 and 45
The main roof truss is supported by single 4 x 4 posts at each side of the truss for each hangar. This should be upgraded with an additional 4 x 4 and a jointing plywood plate for better load transfer. Also the angle brace for the 4 x 4 to the truss is not sufficient. A new brace should be installed and tied to the truss.

Tech Report -

Victor Aviation Recommendations:

A review of one of the aviation publications offered some interesting input from Victor Aviation, regarding Continental Engines.

Victor says the removal of one cylinder for rework or replacement should include the release and re-torque of all engine case bolts. Reason being, they claim the case becomes unevenly torqued when a cylinder is removed and replaced. It is often unevenly torqued because who knows what range of acceptable torque values were used on original assembly and who knows if the torque wrench was calibrated OK?

Victor says the outcome is often case leaking and fretting. Once this has happened, an attempt to “torque up” to stop a leak may result in pinching a main bearing with resultant failure.

Victor has also stated that 95% of NEW Continental cases have been found to have sufficient flaws as to require re-work before assembly. (What happened to quality control?) So, it is not unusual for Victor to pre- assemble a case, and check for fit. They may true up the case halves and line bore to insure the main bearings will not be pinched. Also note the Victor will set specs and standards to a higher level than what is accepted as a factory standard. Victor is in the business of selling optimal tolerance engines, and most any manufacturer can not economically produce a perfect “blueprint” engine.

The article I read was a few years back, so maybe these manufacturing issues have been addressed. Lycoming engines were not discussed.

Dear Chapter President and Newsletter Editor,
The following letter and linked article are sent to your Chapter on behalf of Paul Poberezny, EAA Founder. Please share them with your Chapter members and include in your Chapter newsletter as you desire.

November 30, 2007
TO: ALL EAA CHAPTER PRESIDENTS, NEWSLETTER EDITORS
When I read through the history of your EAA, living every day for half a century plus, I truly know how time flies.
I want to share with you some of the thoughts of our members as they appeared in our Sport Aviation magazine back in 1963. The organization of dreamers, homebuilders and fellow aviation supporters building/designing their aircraft under the CAA/FAA 51% rule we worked so diligently for and earned is something to be treasured. One can build his or her airplane for educational and recreational purposes and friends can work with you for their own educational value. Really, we can build one half of it – the other half, such as engines, propellers, wheels, brakes, instruments, radios, items not normally within the capabilities of those who work with hand and mind can be purchased. Now we are faced with a situation of the FAA amateur building program being used for commercial purposes – from building complete aircraft or well over the half mark … not within the intent of the program given to us by those CAA/FAA folks who believed in us. Let’s hope we don’t lose this privilege.
Sincerely,
EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION

Founder and Chairman of the Board
