March Meeting Teasers

For our March EAA meeting, Jim and Mary Ann are prepared to do a slide show of their recent flight to Gold Beach OR and promote a fly-out there, to include a mail boat run up the Rogue River. This is a 10-15 minute promo and not a full program.
Does this conflict with anything else planned?

On final into Gold Beach, OR

Does this look like a mail boat?

Advantages and Disadvantages of Stainless Steel Fasteners

The recent Kitplanes has a very informative article on the use of “stainless” in aircraft. I will only touch on the basics of the article, with respect to material strength.

Why use stainless fasteners? They look nice and usually have better corrosion resistance. Stainless remains stronger in a high heat environment. (Stainless exhaust systems).

But there can be a surprise regarding strength. Most stainless does not do as well compared to a good steel alloy, with respect to tensile, yield and shear.

So, if your certified or experimental aircraft calls for certain AN or Mil-Spec fasteners to secure structural members, this is not the place to substitute stainless. This could compromise the structural integrity of the aircraft.

The use of stainless fasteners to hold on trim fairings, cowlings, and other non-structural applications is not a problem. Still check with the aircraft designer to be sure.

Memorial

We have lost another member to cancer. I recall last summer or maybe spring, Warren was visiting us but went home early, not feeling well.

Obituary: Warren Douglas Snook
Warren Douglas Snook, 79, of Westport, died Jan. 29, 2008, in Westport.

He was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Iowa, to Harry and Harriet Snook.

Family members said Mr. Snook enjoyed airplanes, flying, spending time with family and friends and his time spent at the Berry Patch Restaurant.

At his request there will be no service held at this time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mortuaries, 576 12th St., Astoria, OR 97103

=======

We will always remember his smiling face at our picnics and meetings. Warren was an active member of our Chapter. He helped with remodeling and even donated a set of Jeanie Teenie plans to EAA1111.
