Executive Meeting

EAA Chapter 1111
Executive Board Meeting Thursday June 26, 2008

Attending: Dwight Irby, Gary Trenner, Al Drewry, Jerry Sorrell

Business: For the July 3rd regular meeting, Gary will ask Todd Heath to bring his video on the Zenith 701.

Al and Jerry will cook the burgers and dogs.

Jerry asked that the financial summary be examined for the payback of the loans. We did not draw any notable income from our open house, once the cost of food purchases is covered.

The exec meeting was held on the way to Aurora airport, while we rode in the Irby Cadillac limo machine. Dwight was invited to see the turboprop conversion of a Beechcraft Duke, which was on display at the Columbia Aviation Association Clubhouse. (To put this in to perspective, this clubhouse is appraised at $1.5 million. All done with volunteers. http://www.caapilots.com/

Dwight had arranged a demo ride in the Royal Turbine from Spokane and all of us took up the offer. http://www.royalturbine.com/index.html

On take off the VSI showed 3,500 Ft/ Min and steady. Now that was impressive.
In a few minutes we were level at 7,000. Amazingly quiet with the headphones removed.
The demo pilot then shut down the right engine. There was some yaw, but with a bit of rudder trim it was still cruising nicely at 180KTs.

Time to return for landing. Power back and those props gave over 3,000 Ft/ min descent.

Low pass for the observers.

The landing was impressively short because on touchdown the pilot did Beta prop reverse and he claimed he did not use the brakes. I didn't think a plane could be braked to a stop as fast as this happened. This was an abnormal experience.

Then to dinner at the clubhouse as guests of the club.

Interesting Stuff

Crash  and Burn-   Aerocommander Pilot Henry Schmitt, while attempting a shallow left turn, hit turbulence, got into a skidding turn, lost control and impacted the ground.  A sheriff department employee saw the crash and ran to help Henry. Henry was fortunate to be able to walk away with only minor  bruises and skin  burn abrasions.   His 49b cc moped bike was not hurt when he dumped it in front of the EAA clubhouse and in front of the sheriffs department employee. Just Henry's pride was hurt.

Here is a great tribute to James Brooks and the P-51 Mustang that he flew in WW2.

Demo flight invitation
My name is Christopher Regis and I represent Paradise USA out of Sebring, FL.
We manufacture the P-1, a beautiful high wing, all metal luxurious Light Sport Aircraft (S-LSA). (
www.ParadiseAircraft.us)
We would like to invite everyone at your chapter to visit us at the Arlyngton (sic) Expo to see our factory-new, third-generation LSA and go for a demo ride. She sips the fuel at 5 GPH but is still large enough for a 6' tall man to recline the seat and stretch out fully. This is a great little airplane for personal use or to put into service.

Scaled down version of an F-16 (UAV) loses 60% of it's wing and the autopilot adapts to the new configuration and keeps it in the air.
Amazing electronic feedback control.

Tech Report - Jerry Sorrel

ANOTHER RV-6-A FLIES AT KELSO   Sunday, June 22, 2008 was a memorable day for Dennis Becker, as the RV-6-A he had built over many years made its first flight with RV test pilot Mike Seager at the controls.   The plane flew straight and true. Some air to air video was also accomplished. Mike will fly off the phase 1 time and then Dennis can use his plane for dual instruction and  get checked out. Son Todd Becker will also be involved in flying and completed his BFR a few days later.   Congratulations Dennis!l

Here is the challenge- go to www.youtube.com, search on cool aviation or experimental aviation and let me know if you can spend less than a couple hours going from one clip to another.... betcha can't...

Editor's Comments

If you have any ideas or comments, please let me know. I want your feedback. The chapter and the newsletter are only as good as the input and the energy of the members. I want your pictures, your stories, your thoughts. Don't be shy!! If you get an interesting link or something funny via the web, please don't hesitate to share it with me.

I hope to make this newsletter a place our members look to for vital information, a thing prospective members appreciate and are motivated to join, a link our fellow EAA'ers around the country look at to keep in touch.
